Handmade by Sarah W. is a flosstuber I love. It seems that almost everything she shows is on my list of things to stitch or after seeing what she’s making, it gets added to my list. I’ve been noticing the cutest little stitched “calendar” sitting behind her and I’ve almost written and asked her about it.
Last night it was late and I was scrolling through YouTube and saw that Sarah had posted a video on her Calendar Cubby. That was the calendar creation I had been wanting to ask her about. Sarah shared a link to where the “Cubby” can be purchased, and, of course, I purchased it. There are blocks that you can purchase so the stitched piece is closer to the edge of the opening but I have an idea – I will either get Vince to cut some wood that fits exactly and paint it dark gray or cut several layers of foam board, cover it in dark fabric and glue it in.
Sarah also shared a link for the Etsy shop where she ordered the charts for each month – Created From The Heart. There’s one for each month and while they’re very nice, they didn’t thrill me so I began looking for something else that might work.
The opening in the Cubby is 5.75″ wide x 7.5″ tall so whatever I found needed to not only fit within that area, but have somewhat the same amount of space on each side. I didn’t want to stitch something that has 1″ on each side and 2.5″ on the top and bottom.
I found these four at 123 Stitch and ordered them last night.
On 40 count, these would be 4-7/8″ x 7-1/4″. That would give me almost 1″ to split between the sides and I don’t think 1/2″ total on each side would work, especially since the piece will be inside the wooden box and a bit hard to see the edges. One option is to find a smaller font and stitch Spring but leave off the flowers in between, stitch the birds but don’t stitch anything on the sides where the hearts and words are, then leave off everything below the roses underneath May. I might would stitch the little zig zag border under underneath the roses.
Another option is to stitch these on 46 count linen. That would make them 4-1/4″ x 6-1/4″ and would leave 1-1/2″ extra on the sides, or 3/4″ on each side and it would leave 1-1/4″ for the vertical so I could either leave 3/4″ at the top and 1/2″ at the bottom or 5/8″ top and bottom. I’m thinking leaving 3/4″ at the top and 1/2″ at the bottom would be the better idea. I do have some 46 count linen here.
Even though these four pieces might be more stitching than all 12 of the Quaker calendar pieces Sarah used, I think I like these better and (1) I would have to finish 4 of them instead of 12 and (2) I would only have to change them once a quarter.
I’m really excited about stitching these. I don’t have a clue when I will have this ready for display but I’m hoping for December. I’m going to start with Winter, then stitch Spring, Summer and Autumn and try to have each ready by the time it should be displayed.
Anyone want to stitch a Cubby Calendar with me? You could use any charts you wish.

Well, I didn’t buy the cubby, but I did buy three wooden pieces to display pieces not yet stitched! You are a bad influence! I do like the four seasons better than one for each month…
