I once had a “friend” on Facebook who unfriended me and said “You have too much drama in your life!” I thought . . I have very little drama in my life but last night, I thought to myself . . she was right! There’s too much drama in my life and just when the drama began to subside, I added more . . in the form of one little black and white dachshund!
You may remember that at one point, I wondered if we would survive Oscar’s puppy years. We did and he’s almost a trustworthy dog now. Cooper .. not so much.
Every one of these incidents was my own fault. He’s a puppy and this is all typical puppy behavior. I need to do a better job of being vigilant and careful but just to give you an idea of our daily life with Cooper:
Thursday:
I was going to give all the dogs their heartworm meds. Rita is easy. I put Oscar and Cooper in their respective crates. I got Cooper out and gave him his pill. He spit it out a dozen times . . all the coating was gone so I opened his mouth, stuck the pill on the back of his tongue, held his mouth shut til he swallowed and it was done.
Oscar was still in his crate so I put two little pieces of food in his crate, along with the heartworm pill. I thought he ate it all . . he will eat most anything. I opened the door, Oscar ran out. Cooper ran in to see if Oscar had left anything. I saw the heartworm pill just as Cooper grabbed the heartworm pill and scarfed it down. I called the vet. They said it wasn’t going to be a problem but if it made me feel better, I could bring him in and they would make him throw up. I asked what was the worst thing that would happen if I didn’t bring him in and they said he may throw up on his own or have loose stools. I said “I’ll deal with that!” He didn’t have any issues but I worried all day about him and didn’t let him out of my sight. You can bet that will never happen again.
Friday:
We went upstairs for dinner. Oscar and Cooper were in their respective crates. I came down and Cooper had managed to stick his fat little paw through the openings of the wire on the crate and reach a Hobby Lobby bag of DMC floss that was in a basket on the fireplace hearth. I have no idea how he did it but he did it and pulled it into his crate. I think his main goal was to shred all the paper tags on the floss. He made a mess of the floss but I don’t think he swallowed any of it but 11 skeins of floss went into the trash!
Saturday:
Last night, both Oscar and Cooper were sleeping on the sofa. I needed to run upstairs and put sheets in the washer. I thought . . it will take about three minutes. They’ll be fine. No . . they weren’t fine. Oscar was fine. Cooper was not fine. There was a zipper bag with the Sulky floss for Reindeer Roundup sitting on the table next to the sofa. Cooper can sniff out floss! When I got back downstairs, he had the bag on the floor, all the floss, and most looked worse than this one. I had to clean them up, cut off the thread that was ruined. I think he pulled all the plastic ends off the spools, dropped them and went on to the next spool. Twelve skeins of floss! Six were saved, six went in the trash.
Like I said . . it’s my fault. He’s just being a puppy and doing what puppies do. I will not leave the room without putting both of them in the crate. Even Oscar . . I feel like I can trust him but I have to be careful with both of them around thread and things that could cause them lots of harm.
It’s Sunday. I am hoping for a day of no drama!

Oh dear, it sounds like you have a toddler in the house. You can’t take your eyes off them for a second and if it gets quiet all of a sudden be very concerned!!! Hang in there Judy, I am sure it will get better eventually.

I can relate – it was yarn in my case. Thankfully puppyhood is over. As to the pills – I’ve found that pill pockets work great.

Regarding the “friend” on Facebook that unfriended you because you have too much drama in your life……she needs to get real! Be happy that she has moved on. We all enjoy your blog!

I had success with a “pill popper” pet piller. It allowed me to get the pill far enough back to get swallowed.

…I know these are particularly healthy but I stick Bugsy’s meds/pills into a Vienna sausage and it’s all gone in a flash. It’s cheaper than pill pockets and Bugsy thinks he got a treat.

..ooops meant to say aren’t particularly healthy
