You’ve all probably surmised that Oscar, even the grown up Oscar, is pretty high strung. When I first started talking about getting a puppy, Vince was really concerned that Oscar might not like a puppy and might not be nice to him. I was confident that we could work through any differences Oscar had with a puppy. I felt like, even though Oscar was a difficult little dog, we could work with him and he and Cooper would become friends. For the first few months, I never let them out of my sight when they were together. Both of them have great respect for my spray bottle and when things got a bit rough, I would mist them with the water bottle and they would separate from each other. Now, I pick up the water bottle, say their names and I rarely have to mist them. They stop what they’re doing when they see that bottle in my hand.
They’ve always played . . a little rough sometimes for my liking, but in the beginning, Oscar didn’t want Cooper anywhere near me if I was sitting on the sofa. We’ve worked through that and Cooper can sit on my left side and Oscar on my right side and there’s usually no growling or teeth showing.
In the last couple of days, Cooper has walked across my lap, walked across Oscar and everything was fine.
Last night I was stitching and Oscar was snuggled up beside me. Cooper hopped up on the sofa and snuggled up beside Oscar. I was sitting there thinking . . this may not end well but I’m going to try to let them work it out and I won’t get involved unless it looks serious. Oscar didn’t say anything! They slept like that for quite a while.
Cooper got down, and after a while, he came back up on the sofa. This is how he positioned himself – his head right on top of Oscar’s neck and his fat little paw on Oscar’s leg . . like he’s hugging him.
Vince couldn’t see them from where he was sitting. I took that picture and sent it to him. He said . . there’s going to be trouble when Oscar realizes how Cooper is laying on him. Nope, Oscar moved around a bit after a while but Cooper moved too – stayed all snuggled up mostly on top of Oscar.
This is the kind of brotherly love I had been hoping for. I’m sure there will still be the battles but seeing them last night made me so hopeful that they’re going to be good buddies.

That is adorable! I wish I could send you a picture of our two loveable goofballs. They do still get into spats, but resolve it themselves without our intervention.

They look so sweet together!

We have 2 long hair mini dauschunds from different litters, but same mothers. It took them all but 3 days to get along. They sleep together, snuggle together and play together. The boy(Einstein) is a reddish color and the girl (Snickers) is a cream color. They both are fixed and are the best of friends!

My daughter has a dog she brought home from Kenya and one of those ugly naked cats that she recently purchased, and that dog HATED that cat!! When she was in Kenya, she had that dog, plus another and two cats and they all got along fine. She’s now had the cat close to a year, and the dog is finally letting the cat lean against her to sleep if she’s in a good mood. Other than that, the cat isn’t allowed anywhere near the dog without the dog having a fit! Maybe one day…

When I was in high school our cat and the neighbor’s cat HATED each other and fought all the time. The neighbor’s cat was white with fairly long hair, so you would see clumps of white hair in the yard. The exception was when it was cold out. (They were both outside cats) When it was cold, they would curl up together to sleep and keep warm. It was so funny to see them be all friendly and then go back to being frenemies. I hope Oscar and Cooper turn into real buddies!
