Please don’t judge! I am NOT one of those people who buys stuff, decides I don’t like it soon after purchasing and replaces it with something new and expensive. My car is 17 years old. The furniture in two bedrooms in this house, as well as the dining room, is furniture the sellers of the house didn’t want and we purchased it from them. The third bedroom furniture is some I bought from Target in 2006 and still love. The downstairs sofa is one I bought when Chad was 3 (33 years ago). We did buy a love seat and two recliners for the family room on the main level.
But . . and this is a “but” that has Vince rather irritated with me . . I cannot find a stitching chair I like. I spend so much time (too much time) sitting and stitching and I feel like it really HAS to be comfortable.
First, I bought an electric swivel, rocking LazyBoy recliner. It was a smallish recliner. We didn’t have Oscar. As soon as Oscar got to where he would sometimes sit with me, the recliner wasn’t working so well. He rarely sat with me and I wasn’t about to say no when he wanted to sit with me but every time he wiggled even the slightest, the swivel or the rocker moved. It’s hard to stitch with that kind of movement on those tiny holes. And, with it being electric, it wasn’t terribly fast going up and down. Sometimes, with Oscar being a puppy, I needed to be up and out of that chair FAST . . to get something out of his mouth or to catch him when he was getting in position to do his business on the floor. So, I have a friend with three children and I figured they could use that chair . . if not in their family room – one of the kids would love to have it in their bedroom. She was delighted with that idea so I gave it to her.
Then I bought a love seat with an ottoman. I thought that would be perfect. No . . it isn’t. My legs are short and the seat is too deep so I have to basically “plop” down in kind of a jumping mode to get my butt against the very back of the seat and then the outer edge hits my legs about 3″ past where my knee bends, which isn’t bad but it is not easy to get in position and with the ottoman, I find myself slipping towards the ottoman and trying to scoot back so my butt is closer to the back of the love seat and I’m not kinda slouching as I sit. And, It just isn’t comfortable. With two cushions, the outside end is very firm but the edge that’s in the middle of the love seat is kind mushy. I have flipped the cushions and it just isn’t comfortable. I think there’s more support near the arm than there is in the middle because the mushiness seems the same even when I flip the cushion.
We were in town today and over by the furniture store we like (we bought a love seat and two recliners and two sets of mattresses from there) and I said “STOP! I want to go in the furniture store.” Vince said “For WHAT??” I told him I want a comfortable chair. As he was turning to go to the furniture store, he was saying “How many times are you going to buy something and not like it? I am NOT buying another chair! What is it you think you want?” I told him . . I don’t know. How do I know til I’ve sat in it a while?”
I knew I wanted to get a love seat rather than a chair. I wasn’t sure if I wanted it to be a recliner vs. love seat and ottoman. I wanted the “seat” depth to be shorter rather than longer. I sat in several and none of them seemed like “Oh! This is so comfy!” Then I went to look and see if they had any wide recliners . . wide enough for myself and two dogs. No.
Then I sat in a love seat recliner and it was super comfortable. But . . how do you know after sitting in one for 5 minutes? I need 5 hours! We talked about it. Vince sat in it. The guy said “Go home, get your dogs, come back and try it!” Hmmm . . he’s never met Oscar!
We ended up getting it. Yes, it’s way too light and we are not the kind of folks who should have light furniture but it was in stock. The guy said “We can order whatever color you like!” I had just heard him tell someone it was taking 4 – 5 months to get Lazy Boy furniture in. When we bought our recliners, they told us 4 – 5 months and it was more like 10 – 11 months. Don’t want to deal with that so we got the one in stock. I’ll keep a slip cover on it anyway.
Next problem . . Vince said I am NOT going to continue giving away furniture. I said “What do you want to do with it?” He said “We’ll put it in the breakfast room!” I don’t think so! There really aren’t many places to put it but he was adamant that we were keeping it. I did some measuring and the old (as in 6 or 7 months old) love seat will fit in the basement bedroom. It will be a tight fit but how much room do you need in a basement bedroom? I told Vince my plan and he seemed happy with it. He suggested buying a TV for that room since we have only the one TV. Our entire married life we’ve had one TV in the house. I don’t watch TV though Vince insisted on putting a TV in the sewing room since it was in a separate building in Texas. The only TV we have now (we have others because we never get rid of anything but they aren’t hooked up and I would be perfectly happy with an old TV). The basement was supposed to be where Vince hung out, watched TV – his little man cave. The sewing room is in the basement but it’s off to itself. But, we got Oscar and none of our pets go upstairs. So, I hang out in the basement with Oscar and Cooper. I go up to cook and eat and visit so it isn’t like I live on one floor and he lives on the other. He comes down to watch TV in the evenings but there are a lot of things he would watch that I will not – bad language, violence, etc.
I think this plan may work out well. By the time Vince comes downstairs, the dogs are usually sleeping so they’ve calmed down for the night. They’ll be fine in the bedroom sitting on the sofa with me and there are places they can run around but just small spaces. If Vince wants to watch something I don’t want to watch, I can go in the bedroom, close the door, watch youtube or listen to Pandora and he can watch what he wants. He may be thanking me for buying another loveseat! NOT!

I am the same way…legs so short that I have to have a smaller recliner to be at all comfortable. I probably sat in 8 different recliners to find one that fit my body…it is so important to have a comfortable chair. You spend so many hours stitching and it is so aggravating to have to keep adjusting your position. In the big picture, a loveseat is not an extravagance…I hope you will get to spend many years of comfort in the new loveseat with the dogs! (and get lots of finishes while you sit there!

Thank you! I think folks who have longer legs don’t understand how hard it is to find a chair that “fits” and how uncomfortable it is with those that don’t fit. I’m sure everyone has their own issues and if finding a comfy chair is my main problem right now, I’m very blessed! 🙂 But . . it’s so hard to know how comfortable a chair is until you spend more than 5 minutes sitting in it at a showroom.

We are in the same mode at this house! Husband had a Lazy Boy recliner–I hated it because it was so ugly, he hated it because it made his neck and shoulder hurt. We drove 2.5 hours to get a used, like new leather recliner. One week into sitting in it, he threw a fit and said he wanted only a Laz-y-boy recliner. I sold the chair and the woman is coming to get it tonight. He is now reclining on the sofa to watch TV. I hate my chair, I’m tall and the seat is too long! The ottoman is heavy and hard to get into place. I would like to find a reclining couch–we had one and same thing, we are both tall and the seats were too long, causing both of us to slump. It’s impossible to sit in a chair/couch or lay on a mattress in a store and find it comfortable!! UGH!!
