A couple of years ago we planted two Witch Hazel plants in the back yard. I wanted them for medicinal reasons and they are good native plants. They’ve done great but I never knew they bloomed. Someone mentioned in one of the native plant groups that their witch hazel was blooming so I went out yesterday to check ours and yes, it’s blooming and it smells amazing.
I have a feeling since we’ve had such warm weather, it’s been blooming for a while but I don’t go over to that part of the yard much this time of year. It’s supposed to bloom late winter to early spring, which is now but we don’t usually have 60 degree days in February. It isn’t in the area where the dogs go so I’m not out there much in the winter. Next year I’ll have to pay closer attention. . The whole plant looks totally dead and if I hadn’t gone out looking, I would never have seen those blooms.

There are four types. The orange flowered variety (intermedia) is a hybrid – a cross between the mollis and the japonica, both of which have yellow flowers so don’t ask me why the intermedia has orange flowers. The mollis smells the best and I’m always on the lookout for a couple of those that are reasonably priced. I hope you can find one!
