Around 2004 was the last time I made soap but Vince found a tub of my soap in one of the rented storage buildings. That means that tub of soap has been moved from Kentucky to Missouri to Texas and back to Missouri over the last 20 years.
That box smells so good! There’s Freesia, Rose and Pear in there – maybe another scent or two. I didn’t dig all the way to the bottom. I would sell my soap at several local craft shows. I enjoyed making the soap and hearing how much repeat customers loved it.
That’s a bar of 20+ year old rose scented soap. I used it to wash my hands and had totally forgotten what a rich, creamy lather it makes and how good my skin feels after using it. That bar of rose soap is now in my shower.
I told Vince . . I might make soap again. He said “NO! You have too much going on!” but a double batch of soap would be enough for probably two years for just us. I may or may not do it. There’s probably close to a year’s worth of soap in that tub so I have some time to think about it.

My hands still smell good!

I can imagine how good that soap smells. I tried making soap in a workshop about 25 or 30 years ago. It was fun.

It’s one of those things that’s so fun to make but how much soap can two people use? 🙂

Share your recipe please. I love handmade soap! Right now I’m using one made from lard but my favorite is goats milk soap. I’ve never made them.

I’m going to have to do some research because I doubt I kept any of my recipes. I did love goats milk soap when I could get the milk. I never used lard before because I didn’t have it but I do now and I have quite a bit of fat in the freezer that I need to get rendered so I may try that too! I will share the recipe once I find one to try.

i have the next best thing to making soap, and that’s a friend who makes it! her soaps feel and smell amazing, but my regret is that they only smell when they are being used. no lingering scent. she said one can use ‘fragrance ‘ or ‘essential oils ‘ and she chooses to use fragrance. beggers can’t be choosy i guess.

I used both fragrance and essential oils but not in the same bars. The one I’m using now is Rose and the scent does last on my skin. I took a shower before bed last night and I could faintly smell it this morning. But, you’re right . . if someone else was making it for me, I’d gladly take whatever they make.

.There used to be a retired chef near me who made soap with wonderful scents. I have sensitive skin, but never had a problem with any of those soaps. You mentioning the lather triggered the memory! This soap had a thick, plushy lather. I miss it.

The oils used in a good homemade soap are excellent for your skin.

I love making soap. I make 2 double batches per year. Most of it goes to my girls’ teachers as gifts for Christmas and year-end. I use 95% tallow and 5% castor oil, with essential oils (lavender, rose hip, tea tree, rosemary and pine). The scent lasts and it doesn’t dry out our skin.
