I had a visit with the naturopath this morning. I really like her and wish I could see her for all my medical needs.
I’m sure you all know already that I have alpha-gal from a tick bite and have had it for 20+ years. In the beginning, the only ground beef I could eat was the leanest I could find and then I had to cook it and drain it on paper towels til as much of the grease as possible was gone. Even then, I would only eat it once every 2 or 3 weeks. Eating it twice within a few days would cause a reaction but I can’t think of any time I had a reaction so long as I waited a couple of weeks between ground beef meals. When I cook a roast, I will cook it a day ahead, leave it in the fridge overnight so all the fat hardens and can be removed.
I am very lucky because some people have reactions if they simply walk into a room where any mammal meat is being prepared. Many people cannot eat butter, ice cream, milk or any product containing anything made using a mammal product. Some cannot eat regular sugar because of of that is filtered through bone char. It is crazy to see how severely allergic some people are so . . I’m lucky.
For me, these days I can even eat a greasy hamburger from a good hamburger restaurant but I take Benadryl before I eat and I always keep an epi-pen with me.
My naturopath said that they’ve now found that alpha-gal may cause joint pain. The way I understand it, and I have no medical training . . allergic reactions can raise the levels of eosinophils and all that can result in or indication a higher level of inflammation and inflammation can cause joint pain. Again . . I’m trying to remember how she explained it all to me.
She felt there might be some correlation between the mammal product allergy and my joint pain so for one month, I had no milk, ice cream, cheese, no beef, no pork, I read labels on everything and, as far as I know, I followed all the rules.
The blood work showed that the eosinophil levels did not come down but the inflammation was less. She does not feel that there is a problem with eating beef and pork, just so I stay within some limits so as not to trigger a reaction. She’s given me some other things to try and I’ll have more blood tests in March.

WOW! Great news! You didn’t mention dairy…did she say anything about that? I’m so happy for you! I’m sure you’ll probably still be careful, but it’s great to hear that the meat isn’t a problem. I bet that made Vince happy, too!

Yes, nothing mammal related is causing the problem. I can go back to eating everything as before the diet. Yes, Vince was happy. Now that we’ve had beef, pork, gravy, etc. for a week, it would be difficult to go back to none of it.

Glad to hear this. Hope some of the others ideas she had will be of help.
