Yesterday, since we had to be somewhere at 4 p.m., I had most of the day at home. I usually make bread on Tuesday and Friday and I’ll make one loaf of rye bread and one loaf of some kind of basic bread. We’ve been eating so much at the cafeteria in the hospital since that’s where we go for PT and we get out of our PT at either 11 a.m. or noon so I had cut back and had been making just one loaf of basic bread but Vince said he had been missing the rye bread and I had ordered emu pastrami so I needed rye bread to make reuben sandwiches.
Tomorrow, we’ll have sandwiches. I’ll have a reuben but I’m betting Vince will want a turkey sandwich.
I love making bread! To me, it’s relaxing and I feel like, at least for the most part, homemade bread is much healthier than storebought bread so it makes me feel good to make bread and it makes me happy that I love doing something I feel is wholesome and I know Vince appreciates.
There’s the two loaves of bread and an emu fan filet steak marinating for dinner. I knew Vince wasn’t going to want the emu so I took out a pound of ground beef and made hamburger steak and gravy for him.
After dinner, but before leaving to go meet the seafood man, I made 11 half pints of vanilla paste. Some will be given as gifts. Some will stay here. I’ll give Chad a jar or two but he can surely have more if he runs out. He just doesn’t want to have a lot of extra “stuff” around and he knows that doesn’t bother me so he’ll probably take one of each home with him and get more as needed.
The four on the right are made with Madagascar beans and vodka. The seven on the left are made with a package of mixed beans and spiced rum.

vanilla paste? first i’m curious what it’s used for, and second how it’s made. this year i made orange extract for friends and packaged it with an orange-cranberry cheesecake. i love handmde gifts, always have!

I’ll write a post about it. Chances are, there are others with the same question. The orange extract and orange-cranberry cheesecake sound delicious!

I would rather know about the emu? Who knew? Is it good and where did you order it from?

I’d be happy to learn about both, Judy! Thanks for all you do and teach me/us.

Yes, I’ve made it twice and will probably start it again tomorrow for Thursday. There should be a link for the recipe in the blog post. I’ll go check it to make sure.
