I had mentioned that we were going to start taking Oscar on little short car trips, starting with just around the block, to try to get him used to riding in the car. Don’t ask me why because other than going to the vet, there’s probably not much chance of Oscar ever taking a car trip.
We had been to Carthage this morning, came home and a lady I know had posted that she had some persimmons for sale and, of course, she was in Carthage. I told her I would take some of those so we had to go back to Carthage. When we first started talking about moving back to this area, I wanted to move to Carthage and Vince said no . . didn’t want to move to Carthage. We do almost everything in Carthage and I would guess we average going there at least four, maybe five days a week. Every now and then, I’ll say to Vince . . “too bad we didn’t think about moving to Carthage!”. He gives me the evil eye but that’s it.
Anyway, when we started to leave, I said “Should we bring Oscar since it’s a quick trip?” Vince said sure so I grabbed him, a towel to put over my lap in case he threw up and off we went. He did fine for a few minutes but by the time we got to Carthage, he was a mess. He was truly flipping out. For a little dog, he’s very strong when he wants to be and I could hardly hold him. I hate that he gets so scared. We got to the lady’s house, Vince hopped out and went to get the persimmons. Oscar wanted out! He wanted to get as far away from the car as he could. Vince suggested I get out with him. I had the leash but he had on a harness that I don’t usually use if he’s going outside the fence so we sat in the car. I was hoping he would realize we were going home and calm down but nope . . before we were out of Carthage, he puked and I was very thankful for that towel. All the way home he was in a panic.
Maybe I’ll just not worry about Oscar getting used to the car!

It may turn out that drugs will be your friend if you have to travel!

That’s what I’m thinking. We just don’t go anywhere that often that he would HAVE to travel so this may not even be worth the effort.

Judy, I’m not sure how long a trip that was but start with one block and then GRADUALLY increase. He did fine for the first part. He needs some successes and praise.

We had planned to just go around the block the first time but the trip today was probably less than 10 miles each way. He’s been able to make trips to Carthage before because we used to go there for custard and he would go with us. We will try a much shorter trip next time. Thanks.

I think that it is a good thing that you are trying to work with him because you never know when an emergency might need you to travel with him. Maybe try some of the trips with Cooper too.
