Oscar’s food is in the fridge in the downstairs garage. Every morning, we go outside for him to walk, then we come in and I ask him if he wants to help. He gets so excited and runs into the garage and waits for me at the fridge. We’ve had a mouse (or two) in the garage downstairs so we’ve been keeping the sticky traps in there.
Oscar runs to the fridge and waits for me. I got there, opened the fridge door and he started barking like a crazy dog and crossed over to the area in front of the stove. That’s when I noticed a mouse in a trap right by my foot. The traps are supposed to be behind the stove, between the fridge and freezer and under a work bench so somehow, that mouse managed to get from one of those places to the middle of the floor.
I screamed and it must have been loud because Vince came running downstairs. He had already guessed what had happened and was laughing. I screamed because (1) it scared me and (2) I wasn’t sure if Oscar thought it was a playmate or breakfast and I wanted him to get away from it.
I’ll never walk into that room again without looking for a critter.

I’m usually the one to carry mice outside to throw out when we catch them, so after all these years, I’m used to them. I kept track one winter, and from October through March, I caught 22 mice in my kitchen. We live in the woods, and in an old trailer, so I keep mouse traps in use year round…

I think I would get used to it if I had to but I hope I don’t have to.

I’m knitting away the other night, it’s not quite dark outside, Mike has gone to bed, I hear something on the window sill outside just to my right, look up and it’s a huge pack rat twitching his nose at me, that thing was HUGE! I screamed. Mike called to me and asked me if I was dying–not, but almost! The pack rat was dispatched in a trap a couple nights ago–good riddance!! And I shot a rattlesnake! It’s been a menagerie around here lately!

Oh, my goodness. The rat looking at you made me laugh but I know exactly how you felt . . you’re note expecting to see eyeballs peering back at you. Good job on the rattlesnake!
