It made me kinda sad to go out this evening and see the elderberry plants without berries. They’ve all been harvested.
Friday I cut three bags full for my friend. Yesterday I had Vince go out and help me get over the ledge and then I cut the rest and got two more bags full.
Probably tomorrow I will juice those two bags, as well as the berries I have in my freezer, then I’ll freeze the juice and probably about mid-September, I’ll start making elderberry syrup for us to take through the winter.
A neighbor has bees so I called him and asked for four quarts of raw honey. I don’t think I’ll need four quarts but one can never have too much local honey.
The okra to the right in the front is a little test patch I grew. I’ve always grown Clemson Spineless okra but I wanted to try Heavy Hitter so that’s what’s growing there. I’m pretty impressed with it. Not sure if I’ll grow it or Clemson Spineless next year. They’re both producing about the same . . can’t tell much difference. The Heavy Hitter may not be getting quite enough sun since the porch shades it some and the elderberries were shading it some. Maybe I’ll try it in one of the raised beds where I grow Clemson Spineless and then I can really compare apples to apples . . or, should I say . . okra to okra? 🙂
