I never know whether to say “sweet little Oscar’ because the only time he’s sweet is when he’s sleeping. As crazy as he is, I have so much fun with him.
He loves fresh broccoli. I will give him a stalk that’s about 2″ long and it has little florets on the end of. He goes crazy pulling all those florets off and just sling them out of his mouth. When he’s left with just the stem or stalk, he’ll toss it around for a while, then he’ll gnaw on it til it’s gone, then he’ll go back and find all the florets he threw around and eat those. It’s so funny to watch.
When I first started putting raw carrots in his food, he would pick them all out and drop them onto the floor. It looked like he was stacking them into a nice pile but in reality, he just turned his head so he didn’t have to walk away from his food. Once he got finished with his food, he would go back and eat the carrots. Now, as I’m putting food in his bowl, he’s trying to get the carrots as they’re hitting the bowl and those are what he wants to eat first.
Yesterday I made a big bowl of dog food. I was getting hungry as I was finishing it and I thought . .a little salt and a little cajun seasoning and this would be good food!
This will last a couple of weeks, three weeks if I’m lucky.
As soon as I finished making the dog food, I grabbed the 8 pounds of ground turkey and 2 pounds of ground chicken we picked up over the weekend and got it canned.
I find it so much easier having the meat already cooked and in jars. I don’t have to take it out of the freezer and defrost it, there’s no greasy messy getting it cooked. I simply open the jar, drain the liquid into a pot, add water, cook the rice. After scoopying all the rice into a big bowl, without even washing the pot, I add water, cook broccoli, dip that out, cook green beans, dip all those out. Then dump the water, add sweet potatoes, mash those, add chopped fresh carrots and chopped fresh spinach, a bit of crushed flax seeds and a bit of ground egg shells. Somewhere along the way, I cook a few eggs, mash those and add them, then add a package of blueberries. I think that’s about it.

Your veggies you cook for Oscar are exactly what I cook for Abbie. I add kale, spinach, lots of carrots, green beans, peas, zucchini & squash, black beans, brown rice, no sodium vegetable broth. No seasonings, of course. She loves it. I switch out the proteins – ground turkey, cooked roast (beef or pork – I buy what’s on sale) and tuna. She LOVES the variety & this is for her dinners in the evening. I cook and put it into mini snack bags (separate veggie & protein bags). We take out from the freezer what we need for a couple of days & put in the frig. Mornings she gets Honest Kitchen, all fish or duck and she really enjoys that, too. She never gets bored with her food. We add some taurine (very important for a dogs heart health) and she gets brewers yeast (needed for joints) as well as a small allergy pill (childs dose) which has made such a difference in her allergies. That, and taking every bit of grass out from the back and front, which she discovered made her itch, so she refused to walk in any grass…terriers are really smart dogs! I love all your comments about Oscar – he’s a character, that’s for sure!

The ground turkey and chicken livers, as well as eggs have taurine so I’ve stopped adding that to the food. When I first started making Oscar’s food, I did add it. Vince and I use brewer’s yeast on our foods and I keep a shaker of it downstairs and add it to Oscar’s morning food in the bowl but don’t add it at the night meal.
So glad you’ve figured out how to resolve Abbie’s allergy issues. That can be so frustrating.
