The calendar tells us we’re in the dog days of summer but the thermometer and the forecast confirm it. Apparently most of the country is having a heat wave but, for us in southwest Missouri, it is feeling a lot like central Texas felt but with added humidity.
I looked at our forecast at Accuweather yesterday evening and saw this next week. This is unusual for our area. I think by the time we get some relief, we will have had about a dozen days in a row with temps well over 100. It’s going to feel like 110 on Tuesday! My tomatoes are not looking great and by this time next week, I’m afraid they’re all going to be history.
I had a friend over yesterday and as we were walking outside to look at some plants, she said “I do NOT like summer!” and I told her . . I’m right there with you. I shouldn’t say I don’t like summer but I do say it . . it’s just that it’s my least favorite season of all. Of course, without summer, I wouldn’t be munching on fresh tomatoes all day.
My guess is a whole lot of us will really appreciate Fall this year.

You might need to add shade clothe over the tomatoes if you want any this year.

We did that a week or so ago but we are on tomato overload right now. I have 12 one gallon zipper bags of them in the freezer. I have 10 pounds of Romas I’ve been saving to make tomato jam tomorrow. I’m guessing there will be another 4 one gallon bags of them ready within the next week so if they all die with this heat wave, I’ll still consider that the tomatoes were a success this year.
I don’t imagine much of anything in the garden is going to survive next week except maybe the peppers.
