It’s been hot everywhere but 108 degree temps here . . they aren’t rare but they surely don’t happen every summer (I hope). It has taken a toll on the garden. I’ve moved tomatoes into the shade. I’ve carefully watered during the middle of the day and tried not to splash any water on the leaves of the wilting tomatoes.
Today I had two different potatoes in two different areas that were looking pretty dead so I pulled them out. Sometimes a weak plant will attract bugs and I don’t need that.
Many of them are small and needed a bit more time to grow but there’s still some good potatoes in there. Even the small ones, I’ll just slice or quarter them and cook them in a bit of butter with seasonings and they’ll be nice and fresh tasting.
I always think of some of our ancestors who, back in “the day”, depended on the food they grew to keep them alive. I’m afraid most years, we’d be pretty hungry around here if we depended on what I can grow.

It hasn’t been hot here! We’ve only just gotten temperatures above the mid-seventies the last two or three days. (Then we’ll probably have hot weather long after everyone else is donning sweaters.) The jacaranda trees are only now blooming! It’s strange.

Crazy weather. Maybe you’ll get lucky and miss the horrible heat this year.

Hi Judy,
It was 98 here yesterday just north of Ottawa Ontario with high humidity..so high that there is thick fog this morning. My tomatoes don’t seem to mind the heat too much but maybe they are a different type. I planted almost all San Marzano.
We are starting to think about putting an AC unit in but we usually only get 2-3 weeks like this. It’s going to be another scorcher today so I had better get moving.

My San Marzano are doing fine. The yellow pear seem to be struggling the most. I would never have thought y’all would have such heat up there. Yes, I’d be thinking about at least an a/c for the bedroom. I can’t imagine that heat with humidity and no a/c. Hopefully this moves out soon and it gets cooler there.
