As I’ve said before, if Attention Deficit Disorder had been something that was diagnosed when I was a kid, I would have been the poster child I’m sure.
Today I had so much stitching to get done but what was I doing?
I was out taking pictures of weeds to make sure the plants were what I thought they were. There were a couple of plants (probably top left) that were in pots and we figured we had ordered and picked them up at the Native Plant Sale last year. Vince kept asking me to check them with the app and see what they were. One is a Service Berry and yes, we had ordered those. Vince planted some but this one hadn’t been planted yet. The other, according to the app, is a River Birch. No! We do not want another River Birch. Those are the most aggravating trees. There are quite a few in this yard and they are very fast approaching the Bradford Pear as my least favorite tree.
Even though we have several plantains that we’ve planted, I can never get enough plantain and that’s what I was looking for. Found a few while out and about but we don’t have any in our yard.
See the lavender flowers? Those are on the purple potatoes I planted. I don’t know if it’s always the case but my white potatoes have white blooms and the purple potatoes have purple blooms. I googled it and it seems that potatoes do bloom the same color as the potato will be. I never knew that! I didn’t even need to mark all those bags of potatoes!

I have a “ ton” of plantains in my side yard to the point they are choking out my grass. I pull them up and throw them in the woods. Never thought of using them as a herb or remedy.

Oh, my goodness . . they’re our favorite weed to forage. I make a salve with them. It can be thicker or thinner, depending on what I want to use it for. Here’s a site that has some good info about uses.

Why don’t you like river birch? they are a native tree here (northern VA) and gorgeous in the winter and summer.

Because they drop branches every minute of every day. I spend an hour several times a week picking up branches. If we didn’t have a burn pit, I don’t know what on earth we’d do with all the branches. Second, I guess it’s seeds they drop in the spring – little flat disk looking seeds. They blow into the garage, get tracked into the house and the cars. I go out at least every other day and blow them off the porches and driveway, back the cars out and blow them out of the garage. We probably have 20 of them in the yard. We’ll never cut them but if I were planting trees, it wouldn’t be river birch.
