You may remember that I had never had cream of wheat before trying it a few months ago. We both liked it but Vince started the keto diet and we’ve pretty much been off grains for a while. Vince was doing some research and he decided barley is a better grain than hard red or even hard white wheat. Better meaning (1) not great and only in limited amounts and (2) more fiber and lower glycemic index. There’s more info on barley here.
This morning I decided I’d grind some barley and make cream of barley for breakfast.
I know that not everyone has the desire to grind their own grains but every single time I use the wheat mill, it makes me happy that I figured out how much I love grinding grain and I’m happy I am able to have the grain mill. There are all kinds of grain mills, some more expensive than others. Cost doesn’t necessarily relate to quality so don’t feel like you have to break the bank if you want to buy a grain mill.
Of course, I added a little butter to my bowl. Honestly I couldn’t tell the difference in the wheat and the barley but it’s been several months since I tried the wheat. Vince is sure he could tell the difference and he said he liked the barley better.
It was fun to try it. Since it seems the barley may be better for Vince, he liked it better than wheat and I didn’t notice it, I guess I’ll be making cream of barley on the days we have hot cereal for breakfast.
I will say that I’m a huge grits fan and I believe I like the cream of barley better than I like grits!

After grinding the barley is it the same ratio as cream of wheat to cook it? Same times? I’d like to try this. Yes, I have the Komo…..yes you made me spend my money…lol. Thank you, I love it.

I don’t know. I don’t measure. I poured milk in, pour the grain in, cooked it, added a little more milk. Sorry. I’ll measure next time. I did end up with enough cooked cream of barley to have for another breakfast.
