There’s no rhyme or reason as to why I chose the projects I chose. As mentioned in Part 1, I wanted projects that were quicker to stitch than those that have lots of color changes but I think there was only one I put back because of too many color changes. This challenge isn’t about finishing but it’s totally about the number of stitches we can make. Here are the projects. I would like to work on each for at least three days, preferably five days but if I get to the point where I’m feeling like there are no areas of mass stitching without counting or changing threads, I’ll put it down and move on to something else. I can add others too if I need to.
I have no idea nor any expectations as to how far I will get with these projects. Hopefully with some intense stitching for the next 31 days
These are not in any order.
1. Winter Rose Manor:
No doubt you will remember that I put this aside because I couldn’t decide on a color for the house. The chart shows the house being a pinky peach, stitched with Weeks’ Conch but my Conch was totally beige and wasn’t showing up as pinky peach at all on my linen. I ordered floss, didn’t like any of those; ordered more, didn’t like those; ordered more.
The good news is that I’ll probably never need to buy pink or peach floss again.
Those shown below are the ones I thought has a chance to make the cut.
I narrowed it down a bit more.
My choice: Light Salmon by Roxy Floss Co. I love her floss but, I think I love all floss. 🙂
I am not changing my mind again. I don’t care if it ends up looking purple on the fabric . . it’s staying! I’ve stitched and ripped at least four times.
2. Cuckoo Bird Sampler:
I started this project a couple of months ago. Start . . as in four or five stitches.
I think I put it away because I was stitching it in a hoop and that isn’t my favorite way to stitch. Don’t ask me why I didn’t just switch it over to a frame.
3. A Sampler For All Seasons
This is by The Scarlett House and was an exlcusive for the Homespun Needlework group on Facebook. The first blog post I wrote about this was in September, 2022. Generally, these exclusives are held for a year before being released.
The day this chart arrived, I started stitching on it. When I got to the bottom left house, it’s charged to be off white but doesn’t show up well on the linen so I stopped, ordered more floss. It’s NPI and at the time, I didn’t have any other colors of NPI. I thought the blue would be great but everything else is warm and it’s so cool, I think I’m going to take out the blue and come up with something else for the house. I seem to struggle with house colors often, don’t I?
I think I’ll use this yellow. It isn’t as bright as it looks in the photo. It’s the yellow used in the door and trim in the top right house.
4. Eloquent Christmas
This is one I had hoped to have finished by Christmas, 2022. It has beads that will be added after the stitching is done.
This is another one that I don’t know why I put it away and didn’t finish it.
That’s enough for this post. I’ll get the rest posted later tonight or in the morning.

Some pretty projects. I like the yellow for that one house, and that’s a good pink, too. I have lots of floss because of embroidery, and Cosmo is probably my favorite general floss, but I also really like a hard-to-find perle hand dyed by Sassa Lynne in Wales. It has such a lovely shine, and it stitches so beautifully.

I’ve never seen Sassa Lynne’s floss. I like cosmo but so few designs have it charted for that brand so I rarely buy it.

I have the Cuckoo sampler chart too! I’m just getting back into stitching (like so many others, I used to cross stitch in the 80s and 90s). In the past I always worked from kits, and I’ve gotten the Jo & Judy SAL kits recently. I have a question – when you start from just a chart (no kit), how do you know how much floss to buy? The chart has a recommended color, but not how many to buy. The Cuckoo is small so I’m pretty sure it would just be one skein, but how do you usually calculate this?

Very good question! I’ll write a blog post about it.
