Last year Vince noticed a couple of morels in our yard and we looked and I think we ended up finding four or five – maybe it was three or four. We cooked whatever we found.
Saturday Vince came and got me to come see something. He had found several morels that were big enough to pick so we got those, cleaned them, cooked them and ate them.
When Chad was here yesterday, we walked around and found a few more. We didn’t pick them but will pick those today and hopefully find more. I told Vince if we had a few more, I’d freeze dry them so we could have them through the year but we don’t have enough for that. Chad was telling Vince about a video he had watched where the guy did something to harvest the spores, then spread them over his yard and has tons of them. I don’t imagine Vince will do it but it surely would be nice to have buckets of them instead of handfuls.

Morels are so tasty, but don’t seem to thrive right in this area. A gentleman I used to work with had found an area in south central SD near the Missouri River where they did grow. He would harvest lots every spring. Of course this year those tasty morels are probably still buried under snow. LOL

Oh my, they are out in your area already?? We won’t find them here in Southwestern Wisconsin until later April or in May when the ground has warmed up. I hunt them in the woods every year. A few years ago (well maybe more than a few) my friend and I hit the “mother lode” and picked four garbage bags under one tree. That was the highlight of my morel hunting career. Now I don’t go in the wood and climb the hills like i used to as old age is setting in! They are definitely worth the hunt in finding them as they are delicious!

That was the mother lode! Chad is a fierce morel hunter. I’ll have to share that with him.
