Most of my days are busy, or at least they seem busy to me. My grandma was always busy – a lot of days she piddled – not necessarily accomplishing much but always doing something. I feel like I’m so much like my grandma. Too much of the time, I’m doing things that really don’t even need to be done but one thing for sure . . when it’s bed time, I’m asleep before my head hits the pillow and I sleep without ever waking – usually until somehow Rita realizes it’s getting to be about 5 a.m. and she starts barking, and t hen Oscar starts barking.
This morning Vince was going to town. He had ordered a couple of things to be picked up at Walmart and he had a few more stops he wanted to make. It was shaping up to be one of those rare days when I have a few hours alone.
The milk man brings our milk on Friday morning and always on Friday, I make a half gallon of buttermilk. Yesterday I finished the buttermilk I made from the milk we got on March 10 so this morning I grabbed the half gallon I had made from the March 17 milk. I culture sour cream with the buttermilk so I skimmed off the sour cream (small jar in front), then poured myself a glass of buttermilk. I add a bit of salt to my glass.
What’s left in the half gallon jar has to last me Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, plus I need to have at least one cup to add to the new batch of buttermilk! I’ll make a new batch on Friday, let it sit out til Saturday morning, then put it in the fridge so on Sunday, I’ll start the new batch. That tells me I need to make a gallon of buttermilk next week. However much I make, I’ll drink so maybe I should stick with 1/2 gallon and skip a few days of drinking it. I have til Friday to decide.
Next I started making Oatmeal Toasting Bread. I got the wheat ground and the oatmeal soaking, heated the milk, measured out the rest of the ingredients. Then . . Vince came home from town and wanted me to go back to town with him. Ughh! I thought I was going to have the entire day at home. I was able to walk away from the bread since I hadn’t started mixing.
I’ll do another post about our trip to town.
When we got home, the freeze dryer was finished with the load it had been running. It had four trays of eggs (6 dozen) so I crumbled those into four quart jars, changed the oil in the freeze dryer and set it for automatic defrost.
I went back upstairs, got the bread dough stirred up, let it rise and it’s now baked.
I had one freeze dryer tray in the freezer with leftover chicken, green bean and rice casserole so I chopped onions to fill three more trays and got the freeze dryer going again.
Vince took my car to get the oil changed. Came back and said they had time to do his so he took his to get the oil changed.
Now he’s back home and we’re going to fix sandwiches, then I’ll finally get some cross stitching done.

That sounds like a really busy day, and none of it piddling around. I don’t like buttermilk, so that saves me a lot of time and trouble. LOL I don’t like sour cream, either. I do like mashed potatoes, though, in case you wondered if there’s anything I like … and I can eat all I want, too!
