All of the seeds for the garden are in the downstairs garage sitting on heat mats to help them germinate. Our night temps are now back into the 30’s and 40’s at night, with a couple of nights in the upper 20’s. Of course, the plum trees are blooming so if that happens, that will mean no plums this year. 🙁
It’s too expensive to keep the heater running in the greenhouse so until the seeds germinate, they’re fine in the garage.
It’s hard to see but a few of the flower seeds have sprouted and a couple of the tomatoes. It’s been warm in there with the canning going on. I was very happy to see life in those little cups.
When I go into the garage to check on my canner, Oscar comes with me. I will say “Want to come help?” Help is the key word. If I leave him in the living room alone, he will get into something . . floss if he can find it. He has no idea what help means, and he certainly isn’t a very good helper but there’s a treat involved if he comes with me so when I ask him to come help, he beats me to the door.
Yesterday I was canning meat and I guess the smell was too much for him. He never gets over around the stove, which is near where my seeds are. But, yesterday, he was trying to find the smell. I looked and he had all four paws on my seed ups – each paw in a different cup. That’s probably four plants that aren’t going to make it!
But, that was his way of helping. I asked for his help and that’s what I got. Be careful what you ask for!

Do you use potting soil or seed-starting mix?

Seed starting mix. This time I bought it but I often make my own with perlite, vermiculite, peat moss and compost or potting soil.
