I had taken five roasts out of the freezer and stuck them in the fridge to defrost. That was five days ago and they were just now fairly defrosted so I cut those up, raw packed them in quart jars. They were small roasts and it filled 10 quarts so they’re in the canner. I took out five more roasts and put them in the fridge so they should be ready to can on Monday. I took out 14 or 16 (can’t remember now) pounds of ground beef to defrost. I left it sitting out in the downstairs garage where it’s cool enough that they’ll be fine today. This evening I’ll stick them in the fridge and hopefully be able to can them tomorrow. As soon as I get the ground beef out of the fridge, I’m going to stick a turkey in there to defrost and we’re going to smoke that – probably Monday or Tuesday.
The old freezer in the upstairs garage needs to be defrosted. Anyone want to volunteer to tell Vince that needs to be done? That’s a job that’s much easier with of us doing it. Today it’s cloudy and .. not cold but not warm. I think I’ll wait til a day when it’s sunny and we’ll just roll the freezer outside, unpack it out there, let it drain out there, roll it back in and refill it. Aren’t you glad you’re not my neighbor? We’re the crazy people who defrost the freezer in the driveway! 🙂
We always bought manual defrost freezers but now that we’re older, I’m thankful for frost free freezers.

I think it’s great you can just roll it out and let it defrost. It sounds like a much easier way to do it. Mine is in the basement, so I don’t have that option! Mine is packed to the gills, so I’m making a concerted effort to use things up!

We roll ours out to defrost, also. In fact, we did it last week!

Yay, I’m not the only one who does this! 🙂

Folks in town call me the eccentric Dachshund Lady. Couldn’t be my orange hair, loud clothes and a crew of yappers.

I can’t think of a better name. I’d love to be called the eccentric Dachshund Lady. I need at least five more dachshunds, don’t you think?

I remember having to can meat waaaaay back when I was in 4-H. My mother commented how nice it was to just open a jar of roast beef for noodles. We never canned any more after that; I think because 1 quart wasn’t enough. Mom always did roasts in the pressure cooker anyway. I also rolled my freezer out to defrost only I was a July defroster. 2 hours in the sunshine and done. Now my trusty frost free does all the work.
