Today has been such a busy day! We had to be at the pickup location at 7:45 a.m. to get our Azure Standard order. That meant we had to leave the house, dressed and looking somewhat presentable, by 7:15. I’m almost always up rather early but I’m not always dressed and decent . . sometimes not all and by the time I take my shower before bed, I vow to do better but usually don’t.
So, we were up, dogs walked and fed, dressed and out the door. Got our order, came home. Vince said “Let’s stop and get breakfast!” NO! Let’s go home and have breakfast! We went home and had breakfast. We had to get haircuts at 10:30 so we had granola, blueberries and milk for breakfast. I got started cleaning potatoes to be canned. We left to get our hair cuts, got home and Vince said “Let’s go out to eat lunch since tomorrow is Valentine’s Day but we’re both dressed today!” He needed a couple of things from Lowe’s. I needed a couple of things from Walmart so off we went again .. three times we left the house before noon! By the time we made all the stops we needed to make, including Natural Grocer to get a few things, Walmart, Lowe’s and to eat, it was after 4 when we got home.
I immediately got started working on the potatoes again. I asked Vince if he would scrape the carrots and chop them to go into the freeze dryer and he did! He did 10 pounds of carrots and I did 10 pounds of potatoes. 40 more pounds of each!
I’m not sure why I thought getting potatoes AND carrots on the same day were a good idea but . . it’s done and now they have to be canned or freeze dried.
As we were leaving to go to town to eat, the Fed Ex guy was at the neighbor’s and I knew I had a package coming so we waited outside for him. He mentioned how good the blueberry roll was that I shared with him a couple of weeks ago. Vince said “She makes that kind of stuff every day (I don’t) and she’s always willing to share.” The guy said “I can only come if I have a package to deliver”. I said “That’s music to my ears! I can make sure packages arrive every day!” Vince decided sharing with the Fed Ex guy might not be such a good idea.
I want to make some pickled carrots and would like to make copper pennies so I may hold out 15 or 20 pounds of the carrots. I’ll probably can 40 pounds of the potatoes and keep out 10 pounds. We’ll see. The way I’m feeling tonight, I may can 10 pounds (done!) and keep out 40 pounds! 🙂

Oh my gosh, 5 pounds would do me in right now – of either one! Do the Amish grow parsnips? I love parsnips, and wonder if Amish ones would be as much better as their carrots seem to be.

I’m not sure if the Amish grow parsnips. I was up there today but didn’t see your question til just now. When we were in Nevada, MO, there was a big Amish farm with a veggie market. Here, all we’ve found is a Mennonite grocery where a few farmers will bring things in from time to time. I do see parsnips occasionally in the Natural Grocer but I haven’t bought any.
