In the summer of 2021 Vince found two or three blueberry farms that were within just a few minutes of our house and I think we put up well over 100 bags of blueberries. We’ve used some we need to use them all before blueberry season this year. Last year he kept wanting to go pick more and I told him we still had a freezer full of them. Keeping them in the freezer for two years is about the limit of what I want to do. I could pull some of them and make jam or syrup and I probably will. Yesterday I started thinking about a Dutch Baby with blueberries. I don’t really use a recipe – it’s super easy but here’s one for anyone not familiar with the recipe. The fruit is usually added on top but the blueberries were frozen so I dumped them into the batter.
I had opened a bag of blueberries and only used less than half of them so I’m going to mill some buckwheat this morning and make buckwheat pancakes with blueberries. Buckwheat is not technically a grain but a seed so it’s gluten free. Neither of us have a problem with gluten but I figure the radon guy will end up eating breakfast with us and who knows if he’s ever eaten buckwheat so I’m going to make this recipe that has 1 cup buckwheat flour and 1/2 cup all purpose flour. That way, maybe they won’t seem quite so different from regular pancakes.
My grain mill is in the basement garage, which is where they will be working so I should probably run get that buckwheat milled before they get here.

I love buckwheat pancakes. There is a scene in one of Laura Ingalls Wilders’ books where Almanzo and his brother are making buckwheat pancakes and putting butter and a sprinkle of brown sugar between each of the pancakes as they stacked them. I always think of that scene when I think of buckwheat pancakes.
