In a comment it was mentioned that someone is more concerned about gun violence, and other things, than about radon. As I was writing the radon post yesterday, I had a blurb in there about gun violence because I knew someone was going to bring it up. Then, I removed that part because I wanted the radon post to be about radon. If you read to the end, and I don’t blame you if you didn’t, I mentioned that I was posting all that info to help some who may not know about the dangers of radon. Again, if you live where there’s no radon danger . . it doesn’t matter to you!
My problem will be fixed. I am not the least bit worried about it right now but I do wish that two years ago, I knew what I know now. I simply posted all of that, with the links to back it up (which wasn’t a fast blog post write) for those who were in the same boat we were in one year ago thinking because our house tested ok in July of 2020 for radon, we were good. I think I said in there that there are way more important issues to most folks but when there is a problem that can be fixed and you don’t know about it, why not share the info?
I will just copy part of my response to the gun deaths comment:
There are almost the same number gun violence deaths, if suicide is removed, as there are lung cancer deaths caused by radon but we don’t hear so much of that on the news because it isn’t on any party’s agenda. According to this article, there were over 26,000 suicides using a firearm in 2021 of the total gun deaths (46,000+ total gun deaths) which, simple math shows that leaves a bit over 22,000 gun deaths that were not suicide. The deaths due to radon are reportedly 21,000 each year.
In my response to the comment, I said something like . . we’ll never be able to legislate morality and make people do what’s right.
I understand I’m old school, and thankful for it, but what stops most bad behavior? In my opinion, it’s consequences that make the bad behavior not so worthwhile. What stops people from texting while driving? I would be happy if phones didn’t work while the car was in motion, or phones that didn’t work at the dinner table or phones that didn’t work in restaurants. Sure, 911 could work in all those instances but when I’m in a restaurant, I don’t want to hear loud conversations by someone (or several someones).
I think cradle to grave, the dangers of drug abuse should be pounded into heads. Yes, there will also be some who will try it and become addicted but how many parents have never ever talked to their children about the dangers of addiction.
I wasn’t the perfect parent. If you need corroboration, ask Chad. He’ll be happy to tell you. 🙂 There were times when I would preface a statement or discussion by saying “I know you don’t want to hear this and I know you’ve heard it before but I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t say it to you every day.”
If we’re concerned about Fentanyl in this country, elect folks who care about that issue and know how to work towards slowing the supply coming in.
If you care about gun violence, then care about life . . all life. Care about controlling anger and learning to walk away from bad situations. Teach your children and grandchildren the same thing.
None of us are ever going to have the whole country behave in a way that suits us 100%. I feel like there are so many things in this country that could be fixed or at least greatly improved but there are reasons the things are not fixed and, for the most part, people don’t seem to care until it affects them and even then.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I’ve known people who seemed to have been and probably were the best parents ever and their children ran into problems. What our kids do is not always a reflection on what they’ve been taught or the example we set.
In closing, I will say that if you are watching one type news channel – either liberal or conservative only, you are not educating yourself. I don’t watch any news on TV but I read CNN and FoxNews’ websites every day. I listen to various folks, both liberal and conservative, on talk shows. I rarely agree or disagree 100% with both sides but, if you are only listening to one side, you are getting biased news coverage and you are making your opinions based on that bias.
And, because I don’t want readers getting angry with each other, comments are off. Feel free to email me if you want to tell me I’m 100% wrong or 50% wrong. We all have different opinions and different beliefs and we need to all respect the beliefs of all, talk to them about how and why they feel the way they do and learn from each other. We, as a country, need to realize that neither side is always right or always wrong. Working together to correct wrongs, fix problems and sometimes just have fun together, compromise makes for a happy home, a happy country and a happy world.
