Before Thanksgiving, we kept hearing that turkeys were going to be in short supply and expensive but here, they were not. We bought a couple for .79/pound, then a few more for .59/pound. The day after Thanksgiving, there were plenty when Vince was in town so he picked up another one. For the price, and the amount of meat, these turkeys were pretty inexpensive.
I think it was Friday that I took this one out of the freezer and put it in the fridge, planning to fry it on Monday but Monday it was still frozen. The weather was going to be bad yesterday so we planned to fry the turkey today.
Yesterday, it rained very early but before noon, the sun was out and it was warm so I asked Vince if he wanted to fry the turkey and he did. It was funny because yesterday morning, I kept thinking I wanted something REALLY good for our meal. I even contemplated seeing if Vince wanted to go out to eat but I couldn’t think of anywhere I wanted to go so frying the turkey was a great idea.
I fixed a box of dressing from Aldi. It was rosemary/garlic and it was good! I never mind boxed dressing mixes. I also opened a jar of home canned sweet potatoes and a can of cranberry sauce. It was so good – much better than most anything we could have gotten out to eat.
Vince picked the meat off the bones. I’m going to boil the bones, use some of the broth to make turkey bone soup, and use some of it to can some of the turkey. In broth, it will make great soup. I also love to make a light roux, pour the broth and turkey into the roux to make a gravy, serve it over mashed potatoes . . yum!
Today, we’ll have turkey sandwiches with candied jalapenos and Swiss cheese. One of my favorite sandwiches!

Here one of the local restaurants has a Cape Codder, which is turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo of whole wheat. It is really good; I make myself one it is a favorite.

That looks so delish! Do you reuse the oil or is it only good once?

We use the Char-Broil oil-less turkey fryer. No oil!

We were in Wickenburg, AZ the last few days and at one of the two grocery stores in that town. A young woman was in front of me with a HUGE fresh turkey in her arms. When the cashier rang up the turkey it was $72!!!

-Check out the recipe for bone broth that came with the Nesco pressure canner. I made it with my Thanksgiving turkey carcass, and it was delicious, and it only take about an hour.

I always buy extra turkey when it goes on sale. Last year I was able to get a couple of whole frozen turkeys for 49 cents a pound but this year it was 68. I only bought one for now until I can make more room in the freezer.
