The Three Things Sampler SAL starts January 1. I’ve struggled about how to stitch mine and I’ve mentioned it on here several times but I think I may (MAY) have it all nailed down now.
I’ve gone back and looked at the pictures on Instagram (#threethingssampler). Those who have finished them according to the chart . . they are beyond gorgeous. Every time I look at those, I think I need to stitch it according to the chart.
But, it’s a ton of stitching and I have so much that I want to stitch. To me, it looks a bit cluttered for my liking, though I still love all of the ones in Instagram. I’m a fickle one, aren’t I? But, I also have wanted to stitch a sampler and make a lot of changes and I feel like this is the perfect sampler for that.
Yesterday I copied the cover, cut and taped and have a very rough image of what I’m thinking of doing. Stick with me if you’re planning on stitching this and if you want to make some changes. I know this is all going to be confusing.
My Potential Changes:
I will explain, or try to explain, the blank space around the text.
Here’s a list I sent to Denise last night:
1. Leave out the fruit bowls and put three hearts that were somewhere else in the chart in that space.
2. Leave out the solid row of stitching between the first and second row of alphabet and put it below the second row.
3. Spread out the words in the center so they go farther towards the edge. Move those long skinny trees from the border of the house row and put those next to the test. I can always add small things if there’s too much space or if that space looks too boxy. I was also thinking I could put my initials near the bottom on the left side of the text between the tall skinny tree and the text, and 2023 on the right side of the text near the bottom between the text in the tree. Maybe above those put the initials and year, stitch a dove on each side of the text.
4. Take out the row that has the doves and the hearts below the squiggly row below the text.
5. Take out the alphabet above the house.
6. On the house row, I’m going to stitch the house, the trees with the squirrels (or, are those rabbits with weird tails??) and the tree with the peacocks.
7. I’m going to leave out the lions and the year and move the doves up. I’m going to stitch the house and then decide about the dogs (or deer), the green pointy trees. IF I stitch those posts on the far edge of the house and put anything on them, I’ll put the flower on the right side on the left side too.
Stitching Plan:
First, if there is anyone else who wants to make some or all of these changes, please let me know. IF anyone else wants to make the changes, here’s how I’m going to proceed:
- I normally start with the borders and get those done but for this one, I’m going to save the border for last because obviously there are going to have to be some calculations done on the side borders.
- IF anyone else is wanting to make these changes, I will start stitching early so that I have enough stitched that you can see what I’ve done and see if you want to do it the way I’m doing it or if you want to stitch according to the chart. I start in the top left or right corner – probably right on this one since I won’t have the border done first. So, if you start at the bottom or the center, my plan may not work for you.
Questions? Comments? Suggestions?

I caved and just ordered the pattern! lol I haven’t looked closely at the pattern so I can’t figure out all your changes but I’m sure whatever you do will work. It’s great to make it yours. I’m not sure what I will do. I love the piece as is but I do see it is really full of things! I think this is one of those pieces that I’ll have to set aside from time to time but who knows? I need to reassess how I’m going to deal will all these stitches I have going! 😀

You stitch so fast, I think you can do the whole think in no time. Did you look at some of them on Instagram? Those are the ones that make me want to stitch the whole thing!

I’ve not looked at Instagram so I’ll need to do that. I had a chuckle with your comment that I stitch fast! I don’t do as much canning and having to run out and about so I have more time to sit and stitch. Unfortunately I haven’t been spending as much time sitting and doing that since I have some quilts to get done but I do set aside some time in the evening dedicated to stitching.

…I might have missed it if you said this but I would get rid of that tiny squiggly outer border. I don’t think I’ll try this one. It’s got way too much stuff smushed together. I’d go crazy. Kudo’s though to you for doing it! I can’t wait to see your progress.
