Days, maybe minutes, after I started cross stitching, I realized I was going to have a storage issue. Small storage ottomans seemed like a great solution.
There was an ottoman for charts, an ottoman for projects I had kitted with chart, linen and floss, there was an ottoman for works in progress, there was an ottoman for projects I had pulled and had in the queue. Then there were separate ottomans for Teresa Kogut designs, for The Scarlett House designs, for Blackbird designs.
Then I added a drawer unit next to my stitching chair and, on top of it, I would stack project bags for the three or four current projects. I also kept a small basket on top and that’s where I kept the floss for the project I was currently working on. As I was done working on a project, I’d stick the floss back in the project bag, grab another project bag, put that floss in the little basket next to my chair and . . so on.
The drawers have all kinds of useful things. They have pens, pencils, safety pins, straight pins, floss tags and the tools needed to make more floss tags. They have empty project bags waiting to be filled. They have note cards, needles, calculators, highlighters, hand cream, nail files – all the things a stitcher needs close by.
Then, two things happened. First, the charts multiplied way too quickly and all my little storage bins were full and a mess and second . . Oscar! He has learned to jump and grab the project bags off the top of the drawer unit. He can’t really hurt them but he knows I’ll chase him and retrieve them and he loves playing chase.
I had to revamp my storage plans.
My dachshunds, probably all dogs, have loved sleeping in the sun. The morning sun does come through this window so I’m thinking if I put a quilt over this ottoman, Oscar may enjoy sleeping on top of it. Boots probably would too but I don’t think he would do it with Oscar around.
I ordered the larger ottoman from Amazon last week. It was $28 last week but today it’s $34, which I think it still a good buy considering what else I could get that would hold as much as it will hold. It’s 30″ long, 15″ wide and 15″ deep. It isn’t a piece of heirloom furniture but I think it’s made decently for the price. I got it all set up and thought . . I could use one of those in the sewing room for the linen. Right now I have it in bins in the closet to keep Boots off it. I could put it in the ottoman and free up closet space for something else.
I went back to Amazon to order another one and saw that I can get two for $42.64. These are tufted and I prefer them not be tufted. Those little indentions are dust collection spots but for that price, I can deal with it.
As always, check the prices before ordering. These prices sometimes change quickly and often.
I think that’s a good deal. I will put these two in the sewing room and put linen in one. Not sure what I’ll put in the other one but you can bet it will take me about half a minute to figure out something else I can store in there. 🙂

So are you saying that all your linen will fit in one of those ottomans?

I’m pretty sure it will. Right now I have 36 count in one small ottoman, 40 count in a small but a bit larger than the 36 count and not much of the other counts. I was thinking, since I’m getting two ottomans, I can put 36 count in one and 40 count in another. I have Victoria Clayton silks in plastic bobbin cases so I was thinking I could stack those in with the 36 count. I have a couple of gallon ziploc bags of trim for pin pillows so I could put that in there. I was thinking I could put my framing supplies in with the 40 count.
