My first dachshund was a red mini and he was mean as a snake. He was my baby for so many years. No husband, no Chad . . just me and the dog. He was a bit spoiled but I loved that little guy so much.
Then we had Speck and most of y’all know how much I loved him and probably felt like we all shared him because he was such a part of the blog for so many years. I never thought I’d have another dog I loved as much as I loved Speck . . but I do. Speck seemed to have such a connection to us. He seemed to know when we were sad or worried and he could be very attentive when he thought we needed him.
Speck was beautiful but I think there may have been some breeding issues and he did have orthopedic problems. I didn’t realize how much it slowed him down til we got Oscar. Speck never had the energy or stamina that Oscar has. Oscar seems so much more agile and able to get in and out of tight spaces than Speck could.
You’ve all seen this picture of baby Oscar. Notice how beige his spots are.
The photo below is from a month or so ago.
It’s a little hard to see in the two pictures but he’s gotten so much more red in the dark fur. He’s way more red than he is brown now.
He’ll be a year old in less than a month. It’s pretty astonishing to see how much he’s calming down. He still has his moments but for the most part, he’s listening more and even when he wants to do something he knows he isn’t supposed to do, he’ll stop and look at us before he does it and see if we’re going to say no. Not always . . but the fact that he’s doing it some gives me hope that we’re heading towards having a more well behaved dog.
Yesterday Addie went downstairs with Vince and she had not been down to see Oscar. Usually he barks at her and I have her put her hand down so he can sniff her and make sure he remembers her. Vince said when she walked down the stairs, Oscar was so happy to see her and didn’t bark at her at all. He did bark at Chad but he hasn’t seen Chad in at least two months.
Last night I said to Vince “Thanks for letting us get Oscar.” He said “That’s ok . . I love him too!” I’m glad we all love each other.

It is interesting that Vince loves him so much. We all knew he would, but to think he was against the idea of getting him now seems funny. I love the stories of Oscar’s antics!

A dog can bring so much joy into a home. We miss having a dog, but we can’t rescue until we get a fence…don’t see that happening any time soon though.
