Yesterday as I was driving Addie home, we were talking about Halloween candy and she was telling me what she had read about the best and worst candy that will be handed out this year. She asked me if when I was a kid . . did we get so many Tootsie Rolls? I told her I remembered different candies. I remember getting little square packages of orange and black candies about the size of red hots. I loved those. She said “I don’t think I ever got those!” I said “It’s been well over 50 years since I went trick or treating!”
She looked at me with her mouth hanging open. She regained her composure and said “Granny! Are you 50??”
Oh, my goodness! I told her .. I was 50 but am a bit past 50 now. She said “Well, I’m surprised!”
I’ve told this before on here but when I was 10, my grandma was just past 50 and I thought she was so old. They had no phone and no neighbors and my biggest fear when I was there was that they would die of old age and I couldn’t call for help. I thought 50-is was so old! I’ve changed that way of thinking!

Kids are so funny. Anyone older than your parents was old to us…lol.
I remember getting popcorn balls and apples. We also got candies, like maryjanes, homemade bags with a variety of loose candy like candy corn etc. Always loved the popcorn balls the best.

There was one house where we always got popcorn balls too. Think of the trouble people went to in order to make those things!

–I never appreciated the popcorn balls until I tried to make them as an adult. Apples were a common give away in our little town. When people ran out of treats, they would give pennies, 10 or so, and my sister and I would go get gum balls the next day. Good memories.

Exactly. I tried it once. I’m betting the first time, it’s always a mess and maybe I would have gotten better but I never tried it a second time.

At least she thought you were younger! That’s better than the opposite… My grandma used to laugh, because when my dad was a little boy he asked her how old she was during the civil war…proof that kids don’t have a real concept of time and age. I don’t remember exactly what all we got trick or treating, but I do remember the orange/black squares. My least favorite was some sort of banana flavored taffy type candy. I was never a fan of bananas!

Right, but I’m sure she feels like I’m ancient . . and to her 50 is probably about like 100 sounds to me.

Walmart really let me down this year. I always can find popcorn balls there at Halloween time. And I buy a couple of packages because I love them – but not enough to make my own! But this year I looked at 3 Walmarts and they didnt have them…..

I never knew Walmart had them but I’m with you. Love them but not making them. I tried that once!

When I was a kid we loved going to some of our close neighbors that gave us caramel apples, popcorn balls, etc. We always went in their houses and visited a little bit (we lived in a good sized town – over 150,000 people). For the most part, it was normal trick or treating with the rest of the trick or treating experience. Some of my favorite candies were sugar daddys and sugar babies and the packs of gum. Love that Addie was surprised that you were 50 (ish). Gotta love those grandkids and the things they say/think!

We lived out on a farm so went into town to about a dozen houses of people we knew well. It was pretty good as several places the people gave us full sized candy bars instead of the smaller ones the rest of the kids got. Bubble gum, Sprees, candy bars, the orange and black wrapped candies, and popcorn balls which none of us liked. Good thing Mom did! Years later I took my nephew trick or treating to some of the same people and we both got candy! “You’re 30? Just a kid! Take 2!” I thought they were old when I was under 10 and 20 years latter they didn’t seem so old.

Old is always 10 years beyond my current age. I turned 69 this past August. My body might be 69 but my mind is about 35/40.

I agree! I think the same thing.

Before Halloween the 3 local grand daughters start asking when “we” are going to make popcorn balls. My Mom always did and I have carried it on. The girls 9, 8, and 4 have fun making them and taking the majority home. I don’t think I am as old as I am but a lady asked “are you really only 63?” “Gee, I thought you were a lot older”. Boy, I must of looked bad that day. LOL She is older than me.

That was a terrible comment for her to make! How nice that your granddaughters look forward to making popcorn balls with you.
