Early in the spring I planted 20 turmeric roots . . one each in 20 one gallon grow bags. I gave a couple away, one died, I harvested one a couple of weeks ago because I needed fresh turmeric for a recipe so I have 16 little bags remaining. The leaves are turning yellow so it’s time to harvest them. I started yesterday – harvested four bags and this is what I got.
That’s a pretty good harvest from four bags!
Turmeric is supposed to have pretty amazing health benefits and we both take turmeric supplements but I like to use the fresh when I have it. Natural Grocer here sells it but it’s way more convenient to have what I grew in the freezer or fridge. This year I’m going to wrap each piece in plastic wrap, put them in a reusable vacuum seal bag and then take out what I need when I need it. The little pieces are very easy to grate when frozen.
This morning we had scrambled eggs for breakfast and I grated fresh turmeric in them. I love growing and using different things.

I wonder how large these turmeric pieces are…larger than a dime? a quarter? a thimble?

You can see the larger pieces and they’re probably about the size of a nickel, maybe a little larger. There are a lot that are between a nickel and a dime and then a few a smaller. I’ll be able to grate most of them with a microplane. The small ones I’ll chop.
Last year I didn’t grow any because of the move but in Texas, Vince made a raised bed just for turmeric and I grew quite a bit there. I would freeze dry it, then run it through a blender and make a powder and then use it as a seasoning.
