Last night Vince and I were talking and yesterday was the first time Oscar has ever been left totally alone. His crate is right next to Rita’s crate so when we leave them to run to town or go to Chad’s for a few hours, they’re always next to each other. Yesterday when we took Rita to the vet, Oscar was barking and howling. We got back and he was barking and howling. I’m not sure if he did that the entire time we were gone or if he gave up and then started it again when we got home. I gave Rita a bath upstairs and Oscar continued to moan and groan downstairs. I took Rita down, took them both out for a walk then I went back upstairs.
I had washed a load of clothes before we left to take Rita so I hung the clothes on the line, washed a second load, did some dinner prep while waiting for them to wash, then hung those on the line. I watered the garden, then cooked dinner, then went downstairs so Oscar was not only totally alone for a while but I wasn’t with him as much as usual.
He was his usual wild self for a while . . you’ll see in the picture below that I was missing a sock because he pulled it off and ran off with it. But after a while, he jumped up in my chair and fell asleep on my lap for right at two hours. I was so happy to have him there, calm and quite and I was able to pet him almost the entire time he was up there.
Each little sign of maturity gives me so much hope that some day having him sit on my lap or sleep on my lap will be the norm and not the exception.

Boots is doing great. He has convinced himself that Oscar does not exist and totally ignores him.
