Because someone asked to see the raised beds in relation to the fence, I’ve tried to get photos that show that but when I look at the photos, I confuse myself so I doubt I’m giving any real insight into anything.
I’m going to guess our south property line (I was facing south when I took this photo) goes about 60′ beyond the fence line but that’s a guess.
As far as the veggies, you can see the sweet potato vine extending from the straw bales. Half the bale went north and half went south so the right half is hanging over into the raised bed, which is where I planted beets so I’m not real happy about that but . . the vine seems to have a mind of its own. In the right end of that raised bed is where I transplanted the brussels sprouts. The next raised bed has jalapeno peppers. The last one back has asparagus. You probably can’t see but the fartherest raised bed on the left has more sweet potatoes. The next one coming forward has eggplant, the next one has bell peppers and the last one, that you can’t see has walking onions.
I left the wheel barrow there for perspective also. It’s funny because Vince and I both said we always considered that line of trees and shrubs (to the right of the photo) to be very near the back property line but we actually have about 8 – 10 feet behind those trees.
See the big pine of some kind? Here’s another picture of it.
It’s so huge and we rarely went past it so in our minds, the property kinda ended at that tree but there’s a good bit past there.
I guess I could have cropped out that piece or whatever is in the photo!
There’s plenty of room to put more raised beds over here on this side. After you go around that tree, there’s probably 30 or 40 feet more of yard before you get to the edge of the house. This is a picture of yesterday that shows it.
Going back around to the south . .
I’m really close to the north fence line when I took this picture. You can see the red wheel barrow I showed earlier, the raised beds, the shop, one end of the solar panels, the covered porch we built last year.
That’s about the best I can do . . no more pictures unless Vince gets out a drone and takes some for me and . . I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.

Your yard looks huge and I wish ours was that big. Ours is not quite 3/4 acres with plenty of trees. My question for you and I know it would be more work for Vince, but have you ever considered moving the raised beds to along the fence leaving space to walk around them and give your space to have more beds? It would also be easier for Vince to mow or at least appears that way. It also might deter Oscar from trying to find around the fence. I don’t try to grow a garden, the squirrels ate everything I planted and we don’t get a lot of sunlight in backyard, plus I have a brown thumb. I envy your ability to grow a garden and the canning you do.

When Vince built the raised beds, he built them far enough apart that he can get a mower between them and we can easily walk between them. I was able to push the wheel barrow between them yesterday to add some manure to the existing beds. I will probably end up with raised beds on every inch that he will allow me to do it.

Thanks for sharing the photos of your yard and fence. It is really nice and big and yes, there does seem to be room for more raised beds and a chicken coop! Love it!

There’s plenty of room outside the fence for a chicken coop and fence for them. I don’t really want them in the back yard but if I were a betting woman, I’d bet I NEVER talk him into getting chickens.

The pine tree is huge and the base of it is very wide. Would you consider having the bottom trimmed up so you can see under the tree in case Oscar starts hiding in the area? Or even worse, starts running around the tree to prevent you from catching him. I think you mentioned that he’ll stay on a leash for a while.
You don’t need all of that tree for privacy anymore.

We’re going to put the 4′ plastic landscape fencing around it. If we trim it, the concrete retaining wall and propane tank will show and we’d rather see tree than those two things.

If you are ever in need of a topic, would you consider telling us about your solar panels? I’d be interested in anything that you felt like sharing.

I can answer any specific questions (or get answers from Vince) but I don’t know enough about them to provide much info on my own. We had them installed at our house in Texas and were very lucky to find a house here that already had a system installed. I will write a bit about them but I really don’t know much that might help someone.

Even just hearing about what you feel that the benefits have been to you, do you often have problems with them, etc would be helpful to those of us trying to decide if we want add these to our project list.

I created the post. Let me know if you have any questions. I think the biggest decision would be the company you choose to deal with. If you have a good company that will take care of any issues and they do what they say they will do.

PS. Thank so much for considering this as a topic. I accidentally hit post before I added this.
