Notice it’s “shoppers” and not “shopper”!
My new friend here is probably more of a bargain finder than Vince is. She’s the one who let me know about 10 pounds of potatoes for $2 . . a few weeks ago when potatoes were still available in the stores. I’m not even going to ask why there are no potatoes and especially no russet potatoes. I was willing to pay extra for organic but nope . . no organic potatoes either. I have plenty of potatoes that I grew but I wanted some larger ones for baked potatoes and to try something in the canner. Not happening! After the potato beetle infestation I told Vince I’m never growing potatoes again but now I’m already re-thinking that.
So, the friend – her name is Janet . . she had told me last week that Natural Grocer was having an anniversary sale and on Friday, which was today til 11 a.m., they had eggs for 99 cents a dozen, limit 2, and if you signed up for their rewards club, you got $2 off your first purchase and that Vince and I could each do it. So, we both signed up.
We did go to Natural Grocer, we did get two dozen eggs each, along with some other things – some on sale and some not. They also gave us each a free candy bar and a nice vinyl shopping bag! We do shop there fairly often so I didn’t feel bad taking advantage of their sale.
But — the biggest bargain was something Vince found. Remember the fence things he bought to keep Oscar from digging?
Before I get comments about Oscar’s safety . . the “spikes” are rounded at the top. If he jumps up and comes down on them, it’s going to hurt but it isn’t going to impale him so I hope he would learn not to do it again and they will be right up against the wood (RIGHT UP AGAINST IT) so I don’t even think that’s going to be an issue. Also, the opening between the bars is between 2.25″ and 2.5″ and Oscar isn’t exactly a slim and trim dog! He’s muscular but he can’t even get his head through that size opening plus . . they will be up against the wood.
Vince had bought about 50 of them when he found them at “a big box store” (Vince thinks I shouldn’t use the store name .. I don’t know why but . . I obey orders!) for $3 each. They had been marked down to $6 each the last time we looked at them. Then he was at another big box store – same store, different location, and they had them marked down to $2.00 so he bought 50 more of them. This morning, he took the $3 ones back. OK . . $50 savings. I guess I would have done it too.
I was calculating – If we want to put those all the way around the fence except in front of the gates, we’re going to need a bit more than 200 of them (they’re 22″ wide I think). So, I asked Vince . . why are you only buying 50 of them? I thought we were going to go all the way around the fence except for the gates?
Vince’s thinking was that we would always be out there with him and it isn’t like he can instantly dig a hole so we could stop him before he dug out. First, Vince must never have seen a dachshund dig or an old woman run because my guess is that Oscar can dig out faster than I could get to him if I wasn’t pretty close. Second, if he’s out and I’m out there working in the garden or even reading or watering plants, I’m not going to have my eyes on him every minute. Vince said “I’ll go back and see how many they have left.” Vince told they guy he needed 200 more – which was almost all they had left so they guy said “If you take them all, you can have them for $1.50 each.” Done! We were in the car so we had to make two trips. I think we have a total of about 325 of them now. We had needed something to put around the edges of the shop from the corner to where the fence is because the dirt is still fairly soft there and Vince didn’t want Oscar digging big holes near the shop foundation.
Then we were at another of the same big box store – different location looking for something else Vince needed and hadn’t been able to find so we went to see what the price of these panels was there – just for kicks. For the exact same thing – same brand store, same town – $9 each and we had just paid $1.50 each for them. Figure 325 x $9 is $2,925. We bought 275 for $1.50 each and 50 for $2 each so we paid $512.50. And I was happy getting four dozen eggs for free! 🙂

Our neighborhood HOA just put up very nice TREX fencing around the outside of our neighborhood. People were complaining because since the fencing is level, there are gaps in some areas at ground level. These are panels are exactly what was recommended to fill in those gaps to keep dogs from digging out.
