Brussels Sprouts Rescue

In the late spring I found brussels sprout plants at the garden center – a six pack of them. I knew it was too late to be planting them but I figured . . what the heck? They grew a bit but then got spindly and sick looking and were struggling to survive. I gave up and stopped watering them. After a while, I pulled three of them out of their bags, threw them on the burn pile and dumped the dirt onto plants that needed more dirt.

That left three and every now and then, I’d give them a squirt of water. I looked at them yesterday and they’re starting to get some sprouts.

I don’t know if they’ll make it or if they’ll produce. I’m tempted to take them out of the bag and plant them in a raised bed. I have empty spots now. I don’t have much to lose . . I almost threw them all away. I think I’ll go out and dig a nice big hole, pull the whole thing out of the bag and see if I can replant it without it noticing. 🙂

It isn’t like we’ve had any cooler weather really but maybe the shorter days has them thinking they should put forth a little effort and try to produce something. I suppose if they do live and produce, I’m going to feel bad about having thrown the other three out.
