The other day I was chatting with a friend and she was telling me that one of the grocery stores down in Joplin has great sales. It’s a store we never go to . . in fact, I think I’ve been once since we moved back here and may have gone one time when we lived here before. Yesterday she sent me a message that they had Green Giant red potatoes – a 10 pound bag for $2.
I’m not sure where they get that the supermarket price is $2.29 because I checked the Walmart price and they have 5 pounds for $7.88 or you can buy them individually for $1.84 per pound. We went to town and went by there and bought two bags of them.
I recently watched Rose Red Homestead’s video on preserving potatoes and I want to try to freeze dry some of these. I want to try some of the shredded potatoes and some of the cubed potatoes. I may even try some of the mashed potatoes.
My friend said she’d let me know when they have really good bargains. She lives closer to the store than we do and she goes more often.
They also had corn for 18 cents/ear but that was all gone by the time we went by. The early bird gets the worm! 🙂

That is a WOW! I paid $6.49 for a 5# bag yesterday, talk about sticker shock. I hope to find a good deal on potatoes to can for the winter.

Isn’t it crazy? Potatoes used to be an inexpensive way to feed a large family and there’s so many ways to cook them. I hate seeing them so expensive.

i remember reading “somewhere” that freezing raw potatoes causes something bad to happen where you should’t eat them. made me wonder why you can buy frozen packaged potato shreds. then i realized they likely precook those, so promtly forgot about it. i never looked into it but all this talk about storing potatoes reminded me of it.

Potatoes turn black if you don’t blanch them. Not sure how it affects the taste – never had it happen. The length of time for blanching depends on the size in which they are cut. For shredded potatoes, it’s not long; for small chunks, 4 or 5 minutes will work.
There are things commercial processors can do that most home canners/processors often cannot do so I’m not sure about how the commercial potatoes are processed.
