Several (or more) times I’ve mentioned San Saba Olive Oil Company that was near where we lived in Texas. We fell in love with their balsamic vinegar and twice already I’ve ordered from them and had vinegars shipped here. We love a sweet balsamic on watermelon and on ice cream or drizzled on warm brie. We like it on sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, or add in some fresh mozzarella cheese. We just like it! We never bought a lot of their olive oils though.
Yesterday I had a frame to pick up in Carthage and next door is Big Dog Boutique so we wanted to go in and get some treats for Oscar. We had to park halfway around the square because the parking spaces were all taken so as we were walking, we passed a shop – Carthage Olive Oil Company! We stopped in there. They don’t have much on their website but they had a HUGE selection of balsamic and olive oil. Everything could be sampled. The lady was telling me to use a box of brownie mix and instead of regular oil, use the Blood Orange Olive OIl and it made the most delicious brownies! I’m going to make those for our dessert this weekend. Chad, Nicole and Addie will be here. It would be nice if I had room in the freezer for ice cream but I’m afraid that isn’t going to happen.
I love their bottles! The Carthage Courthouse is so pretty. Carthage is such an historic little town with Route 66 running through it.
Here are the flavors we got:
As I mentioned, most everything we have from San Saba is sweet/fruity so .. I was going to say we went more savory but I guess savory and citrus.
- Gremolata Olive Oil – the lady suggested that with jalapeno lime balsamic over cucumbers
- Blood Orange Olive OIl – definitely trying that in brownies
- Sicilian Lemon Balsamic – the name spoke to Vince
- Jalapeno Lime – this one was surprisingly one of my favorites from all I tasted.
The shop has been open since December. I told Vince we really need to just walk around the square and shop some day . . when it’s a bit cooler. A reader told me about a hardware store that has canning supplies. I’m sure there are other places on the square that we would enjoy.

We have a store here inn Moscow called Ampersand that specializes in vinegars and oils. They also have all kinds of kitchen goods and foods. So fun! They offer cooking nights where the chef cooks on the big counter in front of you while you sit and watch. You get the recipes and get to eat a fabulous dinner when she’s done. Oh, and a discount while shopping after.

I want to come there! 🙂

Did I ever tell you about the time our friend, Fred Spencer decided to try the Habanero? He took the crouton and literally soaked it in the olive oil! Both the lady and I shouted FRED Don’t!! But he put the whole thing in his mouth! He immediately started turning red in the face, and tears running from his eyes. She went and got another kind of Olive oil and told him to put it in his mouth immediately and swish it around. He did and he started feeling better. He did not listen when we told him it was HOT, HOT, HOT! Bless his heart, he found out the hard way. But thank God the lady was there to help him. So, for Christmas one year we got him a small bottle of it. I don’t know that he ever opened that bottle!! I hope that was not what caused his heart attack about a year later!

No. I never heard that story! I’m betting he kept that bottle and told the story many times.

This is funny! I guess you live in or near Carthage, MO? Just last week, my sister and I were driving from Kansas City to Tulsa and passed a billboard on the interstate for the Precious Moments Chapel, etc. near Carthage, MO. We loved those figurines back in the day (80’s, 90’s) so decided what the hey, we’re this close so might as well check it out. (we’re from Ohio) Didn’t realize until catching up on email and read this post that you were from that area.
