There are so many things I want to say about food shortages, the economy, gas prices – but I just don’t want my blog to be the place that dwells on that. It isn’t political – I’ve always said there’s enough blame to go around for the problems we face.
But, I do believe the future doesn’t look so great for our food supply, and definitely not for our grain, especially wheat, supply.
I’m not saying the sky is falling but I am saying whether making bread is what floats your boat or not, this might be a good time to at least try making a loaf, get help if you feel you need help but when the foods you want aren’t available or are too expensive to buy, bread is a great option. Bread with peanut butter is filling, bread with jam can be a sweet treat. Flour tortillas are an option and can be made using a gas stove if the power is out.
Would I be able to make sourdough bread if the power was out? Doubtful. The solar oven doesn’t get hot enough to make a decent, crusty loaf of sourdough. I could make regular yeast bread in the solar oven. I could use the sourdough to make fry bread on top of the stove.
Sourdough, unlike most other breads, requires no oil, no yeast. It’s simply starter, flour water and salt.
Sourdough became very popular early on during the pandemic when year was not available. While yeast is readily available now, who knows what will be next on the hard to find list.
So, whether you like to make bread or not, whether you like to eat bread or not, this may be a time to at least think about the value in being able to make a loaf of bread.
Comments are turned off. I don’t want this to become a political back and forth. I do not mean it to be political at all!
