Last night Addie and I were talking. I love the heart to heart talks we have. She seems so grown up sometimes and the next minute, she’s a silly little girl. I hardly remember being 9 years old but things were way different back then. Addie wants to save every bug that’s outside (not so much the ones that are inside!) and her next breath, she wants a Gucci purse. Did Gucci even exist when I was a kid?
An expensive purse never crossed my mind til I was in my mid-30’s and now I’m back to having inexpensive purse – having just one that works for everything.
Anyway, we were talking and she was going on and on about Gucci. I asked her a couple of questions and then I asked her “When you’re a mom, if your husband had a job and you didn’t NEED to work, would you rather work or stay home with your kids? We talked about how sometimes it is nice to get dressed up and be with other adults but I told her . . if you’re not raising your kids and someone else is doing it, they end up with someone else’s values and not yours. Even when your kids go to school, if you aren’t spending a lot of time with them and talking to them and asking questions, the teachers are having more influence over the kind of adults your kids grow up to be than you do!
Then she asked . . what if I want to stay home with my kids but my husband doesn’t make enough money? We talked about what’s “enough” and whether having fancy new phones, cable TV, Apple watches . . is that a necessity or a luxury?
She loves Pepperidge Farm Coconut Cake (from the freezer section) and I always try to get one when she’s here for a few days. We were sitting there eating our cake last night while having this conversation.
I told her foremost, God should be important in her life, and her family and from there, she and her family will have to decide what’s important.
She had the most serious expression and she said . . ok . . God, family and for sure . . coconut cake!
I didn’t laugh but I wanted to!

Great advice on the priorities! We teach our grandkids the same. I pray every year that they will have teachers who are believers in Jesus and whose values are similar to our family’s. The world is so upside down these days.

Out of the mouths of babes…LOL!! My grandson told his mom that Grandma was special and so was God, so Grandma and God were the same… He’s six, and doesn’t quite have the concept yet… ??

I just saw this and thought of Addie wanting this spendy pink drink and you wanting to duplicate it 🙂

I ended up getting one for both of us one day so I could taste it and see what I was trying to make. I used ingredients I could get here (Walmart) – sweetened condensed coconut milk, hibiscus tea, apple juice and strawberries. Addie says she likes mine better than Starbucks but I probably put a little much of the sweetened condensed coconut. The more I put in our drinks, the less I eat straight out of the can! 🙂

Now how sweet is that! I love it! God, family and coconut cake! I love this girl! I am so glad you are talking to her. I feel like her mom does also but knowing she has at least 2 good influences (or 3 with other gma) means a lot for her. She is getting good info from all directions. I am sure her dad is instilling these in her as well. I used to sit and talk to my granddaughter like that. We sat at the ice cream table in the chairs that go with it and we colored and talked. That was a sweet time for me. That is why she is going to inherit the ice cream table and chairs that were in Pat’s grandfather’s ice cream parlor in Rising Star TX that closed in 1907!! Fun times!

I never knew Pat’s grandfather had an ice cream parlor in Rising Star! There was one in Addie’s little town and it closed. She was so sad! She was worried that all the ice cream had melted! She wanted to buy the store. She told her dad that she would do everything if he would just buy it. She was probably 5 at the time.

His family has done a lot of neat things. The ice cream parlor is long gone, but we do have a set of the original table and chairs. Pat’s father even interviewed Eleanor Roosevelt when she came through Abilene back in the olden days. That was when she was First Lady. His dad was the editor of a newspaper or President of an organization, so he was able to get an up close and personal interview with her. Hey, in 1980 Pat, Alicia and I got to meet Mrs. Pancho Villa!! She was in her 90’s and she was the only one of the 17 wives that was recognized by the church and state! LOL I think she was 14 or 15 at the time. We toured his house and got to see the car he was killed in. It was in the back patio area.

..I’ll laugh hard enough for you! That was so precious.

She was so serious when she said it. That made it even funnier.
