Yesterday morning I went right out into the garden when I got up. I pulled out most of the strawberries. They were so overgrown. With all the rain we had, the strawberries were rotting before they got ripe. I was going to take them all out because there are several strawberry farms around here and I can buy them and use that space to grow something else. I started pulling them out and decided to leave a few in there. I’ll probably end up taking them all out later. I ended up staying out there working til around 10:30, when I stopped to fix breakfast. Later I went out and watered all the trees. There must be 40 or more. I’m going to count next time I water. Vince has planted three more this morning. I may have to hide his shovel! Just working outside, especially since it got up to 91 degrees yesterday, was tiring.
Addie had asked for omelettes last week so I told her I would fix them this weekend. Vince and I don’t eat big breakfasts as much as we used to but yesterday I fixed omelettes, bacon, grits and sourdough toast. I sauteed onions, peppers, and asparagus to put in the omelettes . . not Addie’s . . she’d starve before she’d knowingly eat onions, peppers or asparagus.
For dinner, we had grilled steak, and I cooked corn on the cob and black lentils – not a labor intensive meal for me but still I did some cooking and had a mess to clean up.
About 4 p.m., I had stirred up a batch of sourdough bread to bake this morning . . not a lot of mess but some.
Last night I fixed tapioca pudding. It seems Addie had never had that and loved it. Another mess to clean up.
I had planned to stir up the overnight sponge last night so I could make Sourdough Waffles for breakfast today but was too tired to do anything else so that got put off.
Last night I told Vince and Addie . . tomorrow I’m not cooking anything big. They both seemed to be about to panic. I said “Don’t worry. We will eat but it’s all going to be easy stuff!”
This morning Addie woke up and said “What’s for breakfast?” I told her “Pop Tarts!” She said “You have Pop Tarts?” I told her .. yes, from the last time you were here. She immediately went to check the expiration date, so sure they were going to be old and she could then ask for bacon and eggs! The expiration date is October, 2022. I guess at her house expiration dates matter. Here . . not so much.
She asked me . . why didn’t you mix up the waffle batter last night? I told her I was just too tired. She said “You could have told me what to do and I would do it for you.” Great idea. I would do that today but once she realizes there’s buttermilk in the waffles, she would probably not eat them. I think I’ll make them, then I’ll tell her there’s buttermilk in them and see how that goes. She almost wouldn’t eat the tapioca last night because there was a duck egg in it.
For dinner, I’m grilling burgers. Vince usually does the grilling but I’m guessing he’s going to be too tired this evening since he’s been out digging holes for trees all day. I’ll air fry some fries and then for dessert, I’ll add some sour cherries (from a jar) to the leftover tapioca pudding.
I will make sure I save enough energy to stir up the waffle mix for tomorrow! Addie probably would not let me get by with not doing that tonight. 🙂
I had a Walmart delivery for groceries and those are put away. I’ll still have to water tonight, but other than that, for the rest of the day, I’m going to sit and stitch except for that little bit of time I have to spend in the kitchen. Hopefully I’ll make some good progress on Mighty Acorn and be able to have it finished by the end of May . . which was my goal.

Kids are so funny! I remember one time my aunt had her trailer house near our house and her kids would not drink “cow’s milk”. They would only drink store bought milk in a carton. Well one day daddy took the carton, put milk from our cows in it and those kids thought it was the best milk they had ever had!! My aunt told them what it was, and they started gagging and making funny noises! She told them it was too late they already said they liked it and they were going to have that as long as they were living next to us!

I remember my Grandma making me do a blind taste test of green beans and yellow beans, because I was positive yellow beans were disgusting. It turned out I actually liked the yellow beans better than the green beans! LOL I did grow out of some of my pickiness, not all of it, but at least some of it. I will eat fresh asparagus now, but I wouldn’t touch the canned stuff (from the store) ever.

I’m with you on the canned vs. fresh.

When I was about 15, I stayed with my aunt for a few weeks in the summer. We had dinner one night at my cousin’s house. I was a picky eater raised in the city staying with our country relatives. My cousin made a pot roast for dinner and asked me how I liked it. I said it was good, then got suspicious and asked her what it was. Turned out this city girl just had her first deer roast. Everyone had a good laugh at my expense.

My mom made my husband a cold “roast beef” sandwich one afternoon as he and my dad were watching football together. When he asked for a second she figured she better fess up that it was actually beef tongue! His face was priceless, but he ate another one. He’s a good sport.
