I’ve been wanting to share my progress but was trying to get enough done to show you and ask a question. I’m so happy with this piece.
The photo is a bit bright – the purple house isn’t so bright but it was a late night picture and I had to use a lamp.
There’s still a good bit of stitching to be done – acorns finished in the border; corner stitching in the border. There’s stitching to be done in the sunflower. The squirrels have to be filled in. There’s a whole big leaf and half of a big leaf to be filled in. There are bottoms of acorns to be stitched, the inside of a sunflower to be stitched and various other small things to be stitched.
Here’s my question: I want to stitch my initials and 2022 and I want to stitch Chad’s initials and the year he was born. I’m not sure where I should place everything. Help please!!
You can go see Denise’s here and that might help you understand what I’m saying.
- The chart calls for my initials in the bottom right corner above the gold border. It also calls for another acorn out in front of the bottom squirrel.
- It calls for three small acorns between the tree on the left and the left side of the house.
- It calls for 2022 to be on the left side of the tree with a star stitched above it.
Here’s what I’m thinking. Please tell me what you think.
- Put Chad’s initials on the bottom right and leave them larger – the same size as Denise’s.
- Leave off the acorn in front of the squirrel and put Chad’s birth year there
Here’s the real question – my initials and 2022.
- I think without it being crowded, I could stitch “JL” and then 2022 more in outline/stem stitch type letters to the left of the tree and still put the three small acorns to the right of the tree (between the tree and the house).
- I could go ahead and stitch the star to the left of the tree and stitch 2022, still in an outline type stitch so it isn’t so big, then put my initials, still in an outline stitch at the base of the tree. I still have a few more stitches on the squirrel’s tail but I think that would fit there.
I want Chad’s initials to be the predominant initials and mine to be simply a record that I stitched it in 2022.
I’m looking forward to hearing what you all have to say so please give me your thoughts. Thanks!

Hello Judy, I think your initials and year left of the tree, leaving out the star. Then Chad’s initials and year under the sunflower. If you have room I’d have the date under the initials, the acorn could be moved a bit closer to the squirrel. Otherwise as you said, side by side. It’s a lovely piece ?

Judy,
I like your idea of putting Chads initials on the right. I think I would put the year he was born/adopted under his initials too. You might have to make his initials slightly smaller though. Your initials and date to the left are good.

If the tree symbolizes Chad, you could put his initials on the left side of the tree or one on each side of the tree near the bottom with his birth date under the roots and maybe move the squirrel over a bit and then your initials and year on the right.

… another option – I like your initials to the left of the tree, omit the star and have JL be offset with the 22 also a bit offset. See Denise’s placement of 22 in her piece. You could also put your initials on the left, omit the small acorns on the right of the tree and add Vince’s initials and the date would be 20 and 22 on either side of the trunk.
For Chad’s name…take out the outline of the squirrel and put Chad’s initials/year under the roots of the oak. Fit in a small acorn if you can. Then, the squirrel can be running running away with an acorn, where you could try to add Nicole’s info as well as Addie’s info.
In other words – you and Vince raised Chad so the tree is growing from his “acorn” and the squirrel is going to plant another acorn which is Addie. If there is a space that looks weird, you could add the star or an acorn (lots of options in size).
Can you copy the pattern and eliminate the squirrel, acorns, etc and then sketch in your revised plan?? It would make spacing of everything easier.
I hope I didn’t make things harder for you… but it would be a nice family tree.
BTW, on the temperature cross stitch etsy page that you referred to in a previous post, there was a tree and the leaves changed with the temp. That would be a nice companion piece if you could decide on a year and find the temp info.
I’m working on a temp quilt, but switching to cross stitch options might be a fun addition to other years.
Have a great weekend!

…I really don’t know what to do about the initials. I do love it. Your fabric choice is fantastic!

Chads initials left of the tree, date at the roots. Your initials bottom right where traditionally they are placed. And fill in where needed.

For me, the tree represents Chad, so I would keep his information near the tree. If you use all three of Chads initials they could go between the tree and the house in place of the three acorns. I would keep the star if possible and put his birth year below that and on an angle like Denise did. I like the visual lines/direction of Denise’s work. I’d use a strong color (like red) for his information to help it stand out. If you use only two initials, then I’d put them on the left in place of the 22, keep the three acorns and put his birth year below the roots.
I also like the idea of using an outline type stitch for your initials and date. I’d put those in the right corner with the initials tucked up close to the sunflower stem and the date below. I envision them with their right sides lined up evenly and the date starting further left than your initials since 2022 is longer than JL. Or maybe with JL centered above 2022? I think there would be room to add something between the squirrel and your information…perhaps a mid-sized acorn? I have no idea if ant of this would fit, but thought I’d share my thoughts since you asked.
Your work is beautiful and I am very inspired by the information you share in your blog. Thank you so much!
I am new to cross stitching. My first piece is Blessings that you and Jo are doing in the stitch along. I’m hooked and am enjoying learning from you both. Thank you for providing this opportunity!
I can’t wait to see how you finish up your mighty oak. Happy stitching!!

Love love your progress on this!! I don’t have anything more to add to what others have said. Want to also let you know I support you having your ads and taking time off whenever you need it. Couldn’t do much commenting while I was out of town…no wifi and very limited cell service.
