Part of the Master Gardener program involves a certain number of continuing education hours, as well as volunteer hours. There are several gardens around town that the Master Gardeners maintain. I wasn’t terribly excited about working in those, mainly because I spend a lot of time working in my own gardens.
One of the jobs I’m going to do is a newsletter for the group. That will probably take care of all my hours needed but at the farmers’ market location, they have a fenced in area for a children’s garden area. On one day when the market is open, they have story telling, songs, crafts and they get to pull weeds and watch their garden grow.
They’ve been wanting to start a Three Sisters Garden in there. Saturday Vince and I met with the director for the farmers’ market, discussed it and we’re going to take on the Three SIsters Garden. It will bean getting the area tilled up and even though we’re getting a late start, we’ll plant the corn, beans and squash, then we’ll pass by every few days and water the plants. I’m looking forward to spending time with the kids and hopefully planting a seed that grow into a love of gardening.
As you know, I love the farmers’ market so, in addition to gardening with the children, it’s a little way we can give back to the market and get our hours in. I think we need 30 hours of volunteer service and Vince and I figure we’ll put in probably 10 hours per week so we’ll more than meet our requirements.

This children’s garden is just up your alley!!! I am happy for this opportunity for you to reach out (you already do so much for others) and inspire the children of your area.

This sounds like a fun way to put in your required hours. One of my best friends moved to Iowa a couple of years ago and went through the Master Gardener program there. She has been teaching little gardening workshops at local schools. As a retired teacher, that seemed like a good project for her. And she has been having fun with it.

Love the idea of a kids garden. I am a master gardener here in kansas. Our county requires x amount of hours on the hotline answering questions. My least favorite part of my hours. Lol would rather work in a garden. I also get some hours at the county fair
