Today was our monthly pickup day from the Azure Standard drop. For those who have never ordered from them, the order is placed online, paid for and then you have your delivery date. An 18 wheeler arrives at the drop location, all those who have placed orders are out there waiting, the purchaser’s name is on everything. The truck driver calls the name, then places the item on the back of the trailer.
I love standing there and seeing what everyone gets. All their items are listed on online but it’s more interesting to see it all in person. Most of what I see are grains in 50 pound heavy paper bags so I don’t really “see” the merchandise. This week there were lots of frozen french fries – so many that I wondered if they were on sale this month. I don’t usually buy frozen things from Azure because we never seem to have room in our freezer.
Today I was kinda sad that our stuff was called early and we were done so I didn’t get to hang out and see what others got. The bad thing is that this month and last month, it was cold and raining so standing out in the rain wasn’t so fun. We had on jackets with hoods and an umbrella but I was surprised at how many people didn’t have jackets or umbrellas.
My haul for today was three bags of dried corn (which I’ll use to make cornmeal and grits), one bag of spelt, a package of lees, a package of purple sweet potatoes, a package of sunchokes, a package of beets, a package of Italian dressing mix and a jar of blue cheese dressing. It as a small order this month.
I had also ordered four little artichoke plants. Vince had put two bags of raised bed soil under the porch for me so I hurried and planted the new plants and hope they survive and produce at least one or two artichokes this year. It will be a bit tricky getting them to produce here but I’ll give it my best shot.

I love Azure Standard. I always thought lots of people were ordering the frozen fries, until someone told me that they reuse the boxes. Made way more sense then.

Oh, that makes much more sense because I kept thinking . . those boxes were not in the freezer area. Thanks for shedding light on my erroneous assumption!
