Ginger lilies are my favorite of all flowers and I do like most anything that blooms. They are the best smelling flowers! My parents had them growing along the perimeter of their pool and the smell on a breezy evening was heavenly! I haven’t smelled a ginger lily in probably 12 to 14 years!
Since I left Louisiana 25 years ago, I’ve tried my best to grow ginger lilies. I had a few in Kentucky and I would dig them up and bring them in winter. I brought them to Missouri with us and did the same thing there. I brought them to Texas and . . they died! They need soil that is “consistently moist or even wet”. That wasn’t happening in central Texas. They also don’t like more than four hours of full sun so they had very little chance of surviving there . . and they didn’t survive.
I ordered three ginger lilies last week. Two arrived today and I promptly got them planted in pots.
I thought I had three basil plants but could only find two so I planted two, then Vince was in town yesterday and he bought a third plant so I had just stuck it in the pot. The ginger lilies, as you might have guessed, are on the right.
The third plant is supposed to be here Thursday I think. I will baby and pamper this three and hope at least one of them blooms this year. I will bring them in for the winter and put them back out in the spring and hope they survive and thrive.

Ginger lilies smell so sweet. I don’t have enough shade to grow them, but I tried.
