Several have mentioned . . well, just a few really . . that their newer dishwasher do a good job of drying the dishes. That’s the exception these days . . not the rule. I was searching to see why some do and some don’t. Bob Vila has an interesting article here and it makes sense.
He even mentions running hot tap water through the faucet closest to your dishwasher before starting the dishwasher. That’s what I was told by the sellers of this house because the 18 year old Kenmore Elite didn’t dry the dishes. I could never tell that it made much difference. I will try it with the new GE and see what it does.

There is a FB group called Just Ask Al the Appliance Expert that may be able to offer some info too. Al himself responses frequently but there are also service people who are members as well. We have a GE that doesn’t dry well either but we do have a Dry Boost setting that seems to help some.

Thanks. That’s nice to know. I’ll join that group. You never know what you might learn.

My new Bosch dishwasher does not dry dishes well. Gone are the days of the heated dry cycle, I guess. Mine has a “steam” dry cycle. Hello… steam is WET! I have discovered if I open the door wide as soon as the cycle ends and leave it open overnight then most things are dry the next morning. Plastic dishes with rims still hold water but I just dump that and let them dry in my dish drainer. Aggravating, but doable. At least I don’t have to worry about MELTING anything in the dry cycle! ??

That’s what I did today – opened the door completely once the cycle finished and, after an hour I checked them and my dishes were more dry but not as dry as I would like. But, much better than leaving the door closed after the cycle finishes.
You’re right. I’ve melted plenty of plastic on the bottom rack in the dishwasher. Won’t have that happening, will we?

When we bought our GE dishwasher found that many of the new models don’t have a dry cycle at all. That changed my mind as to what I was buying because I want my dishes dry. I have a GE and it has a dry boost cycle. It does amazingly well.
I ALWAYS run the hot water in the faucet right next to the dishwasher before I start the cycle. I was told that is important because otherwise you are starting your cycle with cold water.

I have a portable dishwasher so it’s easier for me to tell when the washing/rinsing cycles are done. I then open the dishwasher and don’t let it run the dry cycle, but pull out the racks and let them sit on the door to dry. Much like you would do in a drainer in a sink. usually when I open the door the dishes are really HOT from the water so this aids in the drying. When you go to the next load you might have to hit cancel to stop the cycle you interrupted but that’s lots easier than hand drying all the dishes. I do tip up anything that has rims to hold water so they will fully dry. It’s worth it to give it a try but you might have to do some cross stitching next the dishwasher so you know how the cycles work. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!

I bought a Whirlpool during Covid because it was the only dishwasher available. It does a fine job of washing and is super quiet. The only way you can tell it is running is that the on light is lite. I don’t use the drying cycle and the dishes are always dry in the morning. I have had it 2 years and so far have had no problems. The only thing I don’t like is that it has a filter that has to be cleaned ever 3 weeks. But that of course is why it is so quiet so I guess it is a trade off.

Yesterday was the first time I ran mine on a full cycle since the repairman was here Friday morning and it was so quiet, I couldn’t hear a thing, and like you, I checked a couple of times to make sure it was still running. I opened the door as soon as the cycle was over and left the door open for several hours (maybe longer) and the dishes were more dry than normal but not totally dry.
I can’t remember the last time I had a dishwasher that didn’t have a filter that had to be cleaned. I think at one time they had something like a garbage disposal built in and then they stopped doing that and have the filter that catches stuff but I clean mine almost every time I empty the dishwasher.

I don’t know how wet your dishes are but my new dishwasher wasn’t drying either and the Daughter in law told me to be sure to use jet dry at all times. It did make a difference. But still not like my old dishwasher.

I’ve always used Jet Dry. I can tell a big difference when the little container gets empty.

Wow….I don’t get it dishwashers don’t dry!!! What does turning on the water to get it hot before you turn on the dishwasher have to do with drying the dishes….this is crazy a dishwasher that doesn’t dry…I have a new Kenmore and it drys my dishes….I guess I was luck…I didn’t know there was this problem…..

The Kenmore Elite that was in the house when we bought it didn’t dry well and they were told to turn on the hot water. I’m like you – can’t see how it helps but some people say it goes. I haven’t seen much difference when I tried it.

I’ve read that you have to use the heated dry cycle so the dishes will get dry.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
A lot of the newer dishwashers don’t have a heated dry cycle, mine included.

I’ve never had a DW that dries regardless of what I spend. Cheap for me starting about 18y ago. They all wash just fine. I prop it with a dish towel about 1/2 way through the dry cycle and in the morning I put it away, and most has dried by then.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
It sounds like doing something like that is just something we’ll have to live with. Could be a lot worse, huh?

For what it’s worth I always run the hot water in the sink before I turn on the dishwasher. Just long enough for the water to be hot. I also turn off the dishwasher drying cycle – I leave the dishwasher closed for several hours after the cycles are complete – other than some water on the tops of some of the glasses my dishes and silverware are always dry. By the way, the door stays closed because it’s Bob’s ‘job’ to unload and he usually does it in the morning after it ran the night before. Unloading is one of my least favorite tasks – I don’t mind loading and if truth be told do a better job of that than B but ugh for unloading.
