Remember I told you we were getting worms. Vince had wanted to get the housing set up for them before we ordered them so that’s done and the worms were ordered yesterday.
Vince ordered a layered type worm house but he also wanted to try growing them in a Rubbermaid type tote so he bought two of those and has been working on getting them set up.
We ordered 2,000 worms. We’ve been saving food scraps, weighing them out and putting them in baggies in the freezer. Just what we need is worm food in the freezer. It’s ok . . it’s all people food. There are a few things we shouldn’t give them – onions, citrus, potatoes and potato peelings, spicy or greasy things. Generally, I give them raw veggie scraps – the peels I scrape off carrots, the trimmings from brussels sprouts, fruit peels, fruit that’s going bad, lettuce, kale stems, etc. We read that they love corn meal. I will remember that if I have meal that’s about to get bad.
The worms will be easy to kept fed just with our veggie scraps. I’m anxious to get started. I tried it in Texas and did fair but not great. It was just so hot there and it was hard trying to keep the ants out of the bins. Hopefully it will be easier here, plus Vince is participating so . . we’ll see what happens. We should be having some good worm castings soon.

We have worms in a holey metal trash can outside. We need to upgrade. I’m looking forward to your review of your worm container. I also don’t put in peach, cherry and avocado pits, they never break down. Corn cobs surprised me, they disappear in no time.

We don’t put anything in that doesn’t break down. I think corn cobs are like playgrounds for them. When I had worms in Texas, that surprised me too.
