This morning Vince and I were talking about dachshund personalities. I suppose all breeds have their own personality. Some love to hunt, some are quiet and docile, dachshunds are like bulls in the China closet. Remember the video of Chad and his duck call? This morning I was sitting writing a blog post, something I once, before Oscar, did peacefully first thing in the mornings. This morning he was going to town on a squeak toy – constant squeaking!
I told Vince . . can you imagine two old folks thinking a dachshund is a good size puppy for inside . . small, cute and not knowing that crazy, energetic dachshund personality. Surprise! Yesterday at the vet, she didn’t know this wasn’t our first dachshund and she asked about his potty training. I said “We’re probably making progress but we aren’t there yet.” I told her that he somewhat understands that he has to ring the bell when he wants to go to the bathroom and there’s a treat involved but at this point, he goes on the floor, then rings the bell, then expects a treat. She laughed and explained that dachshunds are a stubborn breed and it seems when they think you REALLY want them to do something, they’re going to find a way to do it their way and not your way. I think she used the word “stubborn” at least five times in different scenarios describing dachshunds.
Almost every day when he’s playing and we’re tired of playing and he still wants to play, Vince says “You told Britt that you wanted one that loves to play! That’s what you got.”
First thing in the morning, we know we’re going to have to spend an hour or more throwing something and having him bring it back to us – anything to run off some of his energy.
I was trying to keep my bare feet out of the picture. This little orange toy has so far proven to be the only thing he doesn’t tear up within a day but it is so loud. Depending on where he squeezes, it makes different sounds and it gets loud.
As we were talking about what a surprise it would be for someone who didn’t know their personality and energy level, Vince said “It’s kinda like getting a wife from Louisiana – a bundle of energy, never stops talking and always coming up with ideas that involve more work for the husband!”
OK, Vince . . tell us how you really feel! 🙂

I think he knows he has a good thing going here! He could have done a lot worse than a wife from Louisiana!

Only long married husbands would make a comment like that — the younger ones would think about it first and then decide “NO”, a wise decision! : ) Mine has made a comment or two, usually in company where he knows I won’t retaliate (immediately, anyway). Oscar is such a beautiful pup. I’m very glad our two dogs are older (7 and 13) – they are very sedate at their age. Our grandpups are coming today, with our kids and grandkids, to celebrate Easter (works out better for everyone). It’s raining outside….the grandpups are full of energy, especially the largest one. He’s 20 pounds & about 3 yrs old, then our 2 at 11 and 8 pounds, and the other grandpup is older (about 8 yr, I think), a chihuahua/yorkie mix at 6 pounds — SHE rules the roost when she’s around the other 3. She totally scares the biggest dog.
