My plans never work out but usually, something happens that is better than my plans.
This morning Vince decided that he wants steel cut oats every morning for breakfast and since I can’t eat as soon as we wake up, he will fix steel cut oats. He’ll eat what he wants and leave mine in the pressure cooker. Wait . . did Vince say he was going to use the pressure cooker? OK.
Later in the morning, Vince said “Do you want to ride up to the Mennonite grocery and then we can get fried chicken in Carthage for lunch?” Oh, yes! I’ll get fried chicken because I love their coconut pie! We drove up to the Mennonite grocery and went in.
Vince: What was it you needed from here?
Me: Nothing! I never said I needed anything from here.
Vince: You said something about the store yesterday!
Me: I said . . a friend wants to go to the Mennonite store. Do you remember if they’re closed on Monday?
Vince: I thought you said YOU needed to go.
Me: No!
I ended up buying a large container of dill weed. Vince bought some strawberry rhubarb turnovers.
Then we stopped and ate fried chicken. Then we went to Aldi because the Aldi we went to the other day was out of their brand of Nutella. Addie loves that stuff. Thankfully, I do not! The Carthage Aldi was out of Nutella too. They had some kind of wine on sale so we bought some of that.
Then we went home. Then we were talking again about Vince making oatmeal.
Vince: I think I’m going to order a small pressure cooker.
Me: No, we have one.
Vince: Where is it?
Me: I have no idea but my guess is it’s on the shelf in the garage.
I went out there and found it, washed it and left it on the counter. I started thinking .. if he’s going to make oatmeal every morning, that means the pressure cooker is going to have to be out all the time. Nope . . that’s not going to work.
For a while, the breakfast room table was in the sun room and it was so nice. I kept the vacuum sealer on the table and I kept a pressure cooker on there because I use it a lot but I still don’t want it always sitting on the counter. I have the new shelves in there but if I’m browning something, the grease kinda gets on everything and when I go to open the lid, the steam goes up on whatever is on the shelf above it and sometimes there’s liquid in that steam.
Me: I wish I had some kind of small table in the sun room.
Vince: We have an extra end table that was in the living room in Texas.
Me: I’d like something taller because if I’m vacuum sealing, it gets old leaning over.
Vince: There’s that Habitat Rehome store. Want to go there and see what we can find?
Since he was in the mood to buy something . . off we went. Most everything in there is used and donated and more building materials and furniture than what Goodwill and places like that have.
We looked at desks, we looked at tables. I told Vince that since we always need storage, I’d rather have something like a cabinet – something I could store things in and not have wasted space underneath it.
We found this cabinet and the people in the store had just stuck the vanity top on it. Vince said “We don’t need the marble top. Will you sell it for less without the top?” They said no . . it had been in there for $85 for a while and they just stuck the marble top on there for display but it was included.
Someone had bought the cabinet and never installed it. All the hardware and instructions were inside one of the drawers.
I was saying . . I WANT the marble top! So, we got it.
On the way home, Vince said “Why did you want that marble top?” I told him . . if I’m going to grow root veggies, I need a place to wash them so all the dirt doesn’t go down the septic tank!” I think he can come up with some sturdy metal legs and build a base for the top to sit on, and build it all underneath the deck stairs so it doesn’t really show. We can put a drain hose that collapses and when I’m using the sink, I can put the drain hose over into one of the raised beds and re-use the water!
Then we found a solid wood door at the Rehome store for $10 so Vince bought that and he’ll cut that down for the top of cabinet that goes into the sun room. We found 12″ x 12″ tile for 50 cents each so we bought that to put on top of the door so it will be something I can clean.
So, for about $100, I got a cabinet with drawers for the sun room, along with everything to finish it out into a useful cabinet; and the top for what will become my outdoor sink.
Now . . I’ll cross stitch! 🙂

We have a Restore in Mpls. that I found my glass door knobs for $6/4 instead of $5 a piece at the antique places. Lots of fun items in those places and a good place to donate too.

Great find! I had never been in the store. Vince found some leather gloves – a pack of 10 I think. They were new and the price ended up being $2/pair.

I eat steel cut oats everyday for breakfast. I make it about every ten days and keep it in the refrigerator. Just reheat in the microwave. I don’t have time to make it everyday.

10 minutes in the pressure cooker. So long as I “cut” the oats the night before, I start the pressure cooker when I first get up, toast the oats in a bit of butter, add the water, take Oscar out, then take Rita out and when I come back in, they’re ready.

We did a fair amount of damage in your Mennonite store today! Thanks for sharing the info. I’m set for quite a while on wheat. I’ll mill it as needed.
Wish I had known about the fried chicken. That, and good fish and chips, are a weakness of mine!

How funny would it have been had we accidentally met up at the Mennonite store today. What time did y’all get there? We weren’t there long and probably left around 10:45.

That would have been a blast! We got there about 1:00. I told the lady you had sent me! She loved it. ?

I love your idea for the outdoor sink! I need something to wash my produce before bringing it in and having a hose to send the water back out to the garden is perfect! It will really help us since we’ll be having water restrictions again this year. I told my husband your idea and he mentioned we could put a bucket under the sink which will work but it won’t be me hauling it to the garden…your idea is better! 🙂

I mentioned a bucket but Vince said it would be easy enough to attach one of those flexible hoses to the drain pipe. Then I said . . maybe I could have hot and cold water at the sink and he drew the line there. 🙂
