This morning I got up wanting to put together kits. So far, the only one I’ve put together that I cannot decide on a linen is Mighty Oak, which is in the Winds of Autumn booklet by Blackbird Designs. I mentioned yesterday that there’s a Stitch Along with Contented Stitcher and others starting May 1. The hashtag for those using Instagram will be #bbdmightyacornsal. This piece is not large so if you’re thinking about doing it, it shouldn’t be too hard. On 40 count linen, it’s going to finish at 6″ x 9-1/4″. I would have done it on 36 count just to make it a bit larger (6-5/8″ x 10-1/4″) but I didn’t have a fabric that I liked.
These are the fabrics I pulled to start with.
Right off the bat, I felt like the bottom left was too brown and the bottom right was too gray so that left three.
My favorite linen among almost all the linens I have here is the bottom one, which is one I had XJu Designs dye that was similar to the September, 2021 linen club piece. I love it but I feel like with the splotches of color, it would be better for an antique/reproduction sampler.
That leaves the other two.
I love Paperbark!
I also love Wren!
Most of the time, if I have other colors of linen that will work, I use one that isn’t the called for linen because that’s what everyone else has used. But, in this case, the fabric that shows the mustard colored house the best is what I’m going to use.
Here’s the mustard colored floss on the Paperbark.
Here it is on the Wren.
I’m thinking Wren is better. What do y’all think?

As I don’t have a stash of linen, I bought a kit from Country Sampler in Spring Green WI for this. They have 36ct Winters Brew in the kit. I knew that was one I was going to do as soon as I saw the book. It is about 2-3 shades lighter than a paper bag.

I do have some winter brew here and I almost threw it into the mix to see which one I wanted to use. It will be pretty!

You know the pattern says it was stitched on Wren don’t you?

Yes, that’s why I said I usually choose something other than the called for color but I like Wren the best.

No help here…I like both of them!!!

Hmmmm, I like both of them! My consideration would be the the stronger dye spots in the Wren, and if that might make it too busy when finished?

Wren is what was used on the sample and it looks fine but all dye lots are a bit different.

I vote for the Wren!

I like the Wren.

I have been working on this sampler Judy. I used the called for linen (36 count wren) and called for colors. I am stitching 1 over 2. I love it!!! I really enjoy seeing what you are working on and your linen and floss choices. You have a good eye!!!!

Thanks! Are you enjoying this one?

Yes Judy, I agree with Wren. It just seems perfect!
