Vince and I go from thinking . . what have we gotten ourselves into? Is he crazy? Where does all that energy come from? We did tell the lady we wanted one with a spunky personality.
Oscar goes as fast as he can, non-stop and then he just drops and he’s asleep for a few minutes; then he does it all over again.
Last night he was so wild, we finally put him in the crate for about half an hour. He fell asleep so we thought maybe he’d be calm if we let him out but nope, he was just crazy. Vince played fetch with him for a while. That usually wears him down a bit. I took him out and we walked around the house a few times. Oscar came back in . . still full of energy but after a few minutes, I looked down and saw this:
He was finally tired, his head resting on Blue Man but look how he’s stretched across Vince’s leg. That does not look comfortable to me but it did look funny!
It’s a good thing Vince loves him! I knew I would love him and I could put up with whatever he does but Vince is really more patient with him than I am.
I googled “When do dachshund puppies calm down?” One site indicated that the one year mark can be a game changer. Another one said “during their second year”. NO! Please say that isn’t so. Oscar is a bit over 3 months old now. Even the one year mark is almost nine months away. We’ll survive but I don’t think we’ll ever get another puppy!

Great. I love to hear that Oscar will be spunky for a long time. Rita is right here. We keep them separated mostly. She’s always aware that Oscar is around but she’s in a little pen so he can’t get to her.

We lost our two dogs a year apart we miss them but we are 70 I know we don’t have the energy to train and keep up with a puppy. And not sure we could even handle a older dog not trained or the huge vet bills.
So we will just be petless for the foreseeable future.

How is the cat getting along with Oscar, you haven’t mentioned the cat lately.

Boots is fine with Oscar. Boots stays away from him. He can get up high and that drives Oscar crazy but his attention span is short so he soon forgets about trying to get Boots to play with him. I don’t let Oscar in the sewing room so we keep a baby gate up at the sewing room door and Boots can come and go as he pleases. It’s almost like he comes out and parades through just often enough to get Oscar fired up.
Boots is on a serious diet so our biggest issue is keeping him from eating Oscar’s food. For now we leave food out for Oscar all the time . . so we have to be careful with it when Boots is out.
This week we’ll start feeding Oscar three times a day so it will be much easier with Boots when Oscar’s food isn’t sitting out all the time.

I’m 73 and if I thought I’d live 15 more years I’d certainly get another puppy. They keep you young, laughing.

We’re real close to 68 and 69 and I felt like we were going to be to the point in the near future where we wouldn’t want to get a puppy. My parents are about the age we will be when a puppy has lived to his normal life expectancy and they have a very difficult time caring for themselves and should have already moved into assisted living. On the other hand, my uncle is several years older than my parent, still has two small dogs and his main living area is on the second floor of his house so he goes up and down stairs several times a day to take his dogs out. So, there’s no set age at which we should not get a puppy but I’m not sure I would do so well if we had a dog for 10 or 12 years and then had to give it up because of an age related issue. Of course, there’s no guarantees. There are young people who get sick or have injuries and can no longer care for a pet. For us, I doubt we’ll ever be without a dog unless there’s a circumstance beyond our control that prohibits us from having one.

It was a full moon a few days ago (the 18th) – was that about the time Oscar was being a bit crazy? When I worked at a dental/medical office complex I always kept track of the full moon as I’d notice it would bring out the ‘crazy’ in some folks. It was funny when one of the younger ones asked what some of us talked about it. They weren’t aware of how the full moon affects some people. Once it was explained then they were glad to know so they could be a little bit prepared for it, too. Now we’re retired I still track it as its crazier on the roads (that’s saying something as California drivers are notoriously rude, self centered and always look for ways to cut other people off on the roads).

Could have been. I’ll have to pay more attention to that.
