I cannot remember a time when I didn’t have a clothesline except when we moved in somewhere and it took a while to get it set up.
I had been living in Louisiana when Vince and I got married and I moved to Kentucky. The clothesline I had at the house in Louisiana was one that had been at the house for probably 30 years . . many years before I had moved it, so I never planned to take it. When Vince found the house that we bought, he was telling me everything about the house and he casually said it had a clothesline and he was surprised how happy I was about that. He said he had figured he would take it down and I said NO! I want it!
We left it at the house there and when we got to the house in Missouri, we could not find good, heavy duty clothesline poles. We searched; we made lots of phone calls so finally Vince had a welder make some. The are super heavy and will last a lifetime or two.
Vince put them up at the house in MO and then when we started to leave there, I asked him if we could bring them. He said yes, and he dug them up and moved them to Texas. As he was packing up the house in Texas, he took the time to dig up the clothesline poles and bring them here.
I hadn’t been asking too much about them because he got here in April last year and there was so much to get done, I figured the clothesline poles were not at the top of is priority list; then there was winter and now, I’m ready for my clothesline poles.
We bought some of the washable puppy pads and I figured, since they will get washed by themselves, it would be a good time to get the clothesline up and not have to use the dryer so much.
Yesterday Vince dug the holes, mixed up the concrete and I helped steady the poles and we got them set. Probably Tuesday, he’ll sand them and re-paint them; and maybe next weekend the concrete will be cured enough that he’ll put the lines on them and I’ll be back in the business of hanging out our clothes.
Vince ended up setting one pole in 320 pounds of concrete. He had to keep digging the hole to get the rocks out. He said “These poles are never being moved again!”
I was talking to Chad last night and I said “Do you want our clothesline poles when we’re done with them?” He said “Why would I? I HATE clothes that have been on the clothesline!” What? Some day I bet he’s going to say “I wish I had taken those clothesline poles mom had!” 🙂

My grandmother had one line empty and would attach her dog to it when she was outside. He could run the whole length of the line and not get tangled. You’d have to be outside with him but he might have a little more area to run around.

That’s a great idea. Once Oscar calms down a bit, when I’m outside working and can see him, I may try that.

I miss a clothesline! One would think the push ‘to go green’ would loosen those rules that prohibit lines! I had always said that I would never move where others controlled my life. Well, we did! I have no where to air quilts!

We do what we have to do. I said I’d never move into a subdivision again and I did.

When I was growing up we had one pole. The other end of the clothes lines were attached to the garage. When my parents moved, they didn’t take the pole. The house they bought had one of the poles that folded out into a square clothesline, but I don’t remember my Mom using it very much. My house doesn’t have a clothesline any more. It had one of the square ones, but it was falling apart when I moved in, so I just took it down. I’m hardly ever home to use a clothesline, so I’ve never looked to put one up. There are a few things I would hang up from time to time, but not enough to make it worthwhile.

If it isn’t raining, I hang everything on the line.

Hook Oscar’s leash to one of the lines and he can run back and forth to his heart’s content. We did that for one of our dogs many years ago.

I can’t do it unless I’m outside to watch him. He’s so small and a hawk could easily get him.

I love the smell of sheets that have been dried in the sun! Plus there are many things I don’t want to put in the dryer!!
